Official Kickoff Mix from Synthetic Hype for TBTNs Swipe The Funk Series - This Saturday in Los Angeles

The Hype will be live. The Hype will be televised.

Synthetic Hype is a Breaks duo comprised of two veteran DJs, producers, and sound designers. Known to benchpress basslines, these two mix grit with silk. Both originally from Vancouver, Canada - they veer from the norm and away from the brain damaged 4 on the floor crowd. Their no-nonsense production and 'against the grain approach' to engineering leaves most believing the hype.

Mt Doyle is a Canadian dj / producer who takes his inspiration from the electronic music scene and beutiful surroundings of Vancouver Island. Well known as a purveyor of fine Drum n Bass he has now taken to producing Funk, House, Glitch and Hip-Hop to broaden his horizons but here he reverts back to type and delivers a very crisp, smooth, silky Liquid Drum n Bass mix for your pleasure. My suggestion, post barbeque boogie. Welcome Music lovers.. hope everyone is well and you havn’t missed me too much.

These mixtape dig’s should be coming out at a much more consistant rate now that I’m back from holiday (It was great thank you) and settling into the UK lifestyle here in Bristol.. I have to say my initial feeling is that I like this place. I like it a lot.

I am very excited to share this weeks mix with you because it was recorded by one of my favourite DJ’s

Im not sure if I can call him underrated because anyone actually putting a rating on him wouldn’t dip below top marks.. If you havn’t heard of him it’s probably because he is so bloody humble, and he doesn’t DJ for the spotlight or popularity, he does it because he loves music. FACT.

When Luke Stereo DJ’s in the Ghetto Funk nightclub we never know what to expect genre-wise.. it could be breaks, disco, acid house.. but all I can say is that I love it every time. I would like to think that most people’s music tastes are always changing and evolving, if you feel like you have a good appreciation for music and are open to discovering new music.. GOOD music, you should start by clicking HERE and following Luke on facebook.. trust me, it’s going to open some doors for you.

I pulled Luke out of his busy schedule that mainly consists of just hanging out and being a legend, and got him to answer a few questions for you all.

How was 2013 for you and what were your most memorable moments?

Luke: 2013 for me was special. I lost count of the number of festivals I did last year, but highlights would be definitely be playing at Glastonbury, which is always amazing,  and Shambala with the guys from Ghetto Funk. The smaller festivals have a fantastic vibe and can definitely hold their own along side the big boys!

What would you say is the best and worst thing about being a DJ?

Luke:
The
best thing for me is having an excuse to spend lots of time and money hunting for music! Apart from that, just being able to share great music with other people, who will hopefully dig it too. The worst thing? There isn’t a worst thing. Anyone who says there is is either taking it all way too seriously, or they’ve forgotten why they wanted to be a DJ to begin with.

What is one of your “secret weapons” eg. a track that is guaranteed to send the crowd crazy every time?

Luke: There’s an old warehouse track called “Airport’89″ by Wood Allen, thats a favourite. “Apache” is of course an anthem in any circles, but the Warrior One remix absolutely destroys it every time I play it, so I’m gonna go with that

You’re stuck on a desert island for a month with only one album to listen to.. what would you choose and why?

Luke: A special edited version of “Revolver” by The Beatles with “Yellow Submarine” removed. It’s my favourite album, I think I’ve got 3 copies of it, but man, I HATE “Yellow Submarine”. I don’t know what they were thinking! But it’s also got “I’m Only Sleeping”, and of course “Tomorrow Never Knows” so it’s beyond amazing.

What is your favourite piece of equipment for either DJing or producing?

Luke: I’m a rarity nowadays I think, a DJ with no interest in making music. I’m simply a selector. But without a doubt, moving to Serato has been the most worthwhile technological change for me, especially for playing longer sets. It’s just great having all my music with me. I’m a 2 decks and a mixer kind of guy! I’d like to say its a ‘Korg Flangelator 5000′ but I don’t really know what all that stuff does!

Who’s on your radar as an up-and-comer/one to watch and why?

Luke: Skalliiwaggles is one of my favourite young producers & DJs. The guy seems to have a great knowledge and understanding of music from all around the world. Also Lemmy Ashton who has been making glorious noise for a couple of years now, but I don’t think gets the props he deserves.

How’s 2014 shaping up for you so far?

Luke: So far things are looking good. My first gig was new years eve/day in Bristol and was an absolute corker, the crowd were fantastic. Plenty of upcoming gigs around Cambridge, where I’m based, and of course festival season is on the horizon. Got a few festival dates to announce soon, I’m hoping Glastonbury will be in there again!

Anything you’re particularly hyped for?

Luke: Yeah, definitely the Shindig Weekender in May. The line-up is IMMENSE, Greg Wilson is a hero of mine so to be on the same line up is an honour. Aside from that, just seeing what happens, and hoping to improve what I do.

Amazing

Right music lovers let’s get straight into the mix now that you are sufficiently lubricated and feeling slightly emotional..

Written by guest reviewer Juxtapose, one half of The Beatslappaz.

Sometimes it’s worth looking for sample packs that aren’t labelled “Breaks” to get your fix. Rankin Audio, the brainchild of High Rankin has been delivering top notch sample packs covering all the other key electronic music genres. They have also just recently launched a monthly subscription service to deliver unique samples every month for a fee. Though not labeled as breaks, there’s definitely something here for the intrepid producer …

Dubstep, Trap and DNB Subscription – £9.95 per month

It’s no secret that as both the Beatslappaz and Juxtapose I’ve always leaned heavily on Rankin Audio to provide clean, heavy drum samples that cut through a complicated mix. The drum samples that come with the dubstep and trap packs always deliver and the ones here are likewise unmissable.

The loops range between 140bpm and 174bpm, so your milage will vary with the included music loops when applying them to a breakbeat tempo. With that said, every loop can be used for inspiration, including grabbing chord progressions (the key is labelled on each sample) or using the provided bass and synth Hits to recreate them at the needed speed. The 10 included Massive presets are also excellent.

I think any breaks producer will find a lot of use with the single hits and Massive presets in this pack, which is worth the price of admission alone. Recommended.

House and Garage Subscription – £9.95 per month

Fans of the Stanton Warriors latest sounds rejoice – this is the pack for you. Filled with melodic, beautiful stabs and loops combined with bouncy bass patterns, any one of the sounds included could catapult you into writing your next bass music hit.

Once again the samples are provided as a mix of loops and hits but with the tempo set at 124bpm, just about every loop could be put straight into a breaks project as is or cut up with minimal fuss. Unfortunately there are no Massive presets included in this pack, but the bass and synth can of course be put into any sampler.

The drums are geared more towards the house sound, so you’ll find the hits here to be a bit more subtle than the previous pack – however the strength is in the percussive grooves which will add some great rhythm to your tunes.

I’m a big fan of this sound growing in breaks so this pack is highly recommended.

Complete Subscription (Both packs) – £15.95 per month

As a producer, I found things from both packs that will help with my work – uncompromising drums in the Trap pack and brilliant forward-thinking bass patterns and synth samples in the House pack. For just £15.95 you won’t be disappointed, and who knows? Maybe they’ll inspire you to explore some of the other genres that are on offer…

These particular packs may not be available at the time of reading, but trust us when we say you will definitely find something suitable for your audio needs by signing up to the Rankin Audio subscription service.

Sumer is here!!!!! Well, the clocks have gone forward anyway so what better time to curate a selection of Bass, 140 & DnB Bangers?

Kode 5 drop another huge on a King Kong kinda scale release with Prime Attack’s ‘The Feeling’, a little history on Prime Attack is appropriate here, if ‘where were you in 92′ applies to you (see what I did there?) then you may recall ‘How Many Ravers’ by Prime Attack

This writer remembers it from a compilation ‘Red Hot & White Labels Vol 2′ featuring a nice picture of a troll on the front, a compilation I bought at the tender age of 13yrs old……

So whats the connection you may ask? ‘The Feeling’ was the B Side to ‘How Many Ravers’ and can be found on the current release along with a brand new remix bringing it up to date for 2014, its worth having for both though as that 92 original will have tingles running down your spine even if you weren’t around back then!!!!

BUY HERE

And now on to some dreamy string laden footwork jungle by the aptly named Beach Club on Dred Collective, pick up this lush string laden amen tastic EP for a quid from their bandcamp….

BUY HERE

On the bass tip, Son Of Kick has a new release due out on the 28th April, 2014 on Midification Records, a truly different production which starts by slowly winding up the tempo of a nice grimey beat featuring Lady Leshurr’s bars and a nice Jazzy/Soulful drop completely off kilter with a sweet chorus from Paigey Cakey, has to be heard to be believed, all conventions are thrown off and it works so well, genre defining forward thinking bass music at its very finest

You can pre order ‘Hours’ by Son Of Kick Ft Lady Leshurr & Paigy Cakey from iTunes

One half of Shed Edz, James Breakthru has put together a remix of rave classic ‘Narra Mine’ b Genaside II in a 140/electro breaks crossover stylee which this writer is feeling, a great uptempo remix with plenty of squelchy bass…

Strange Rollers take it back to 1994 with a rinse out jungle reworking of Buju Banton’s ‘Operation Ardent’ for the brock out crew, horns and lighters at the ready!!!!

To round things up, we welcome back seminal 90′s imprint, Impact Records, founded by DJ Seduction, home to many a much loved rave anthem, 2 of which are brought up to date for 2014 by Stormski & DJ Nicky Allen….
