Originally made only as a one off for JAMIE GEORGE and HANNA WANTS, Four40 Records founder, HYBRID THEORY, reworked “Butterflies” into smooth garage-tinged floor filler. The vocals have been pitched down, creating a bit of a soulful feel. The four-four and deep bassline, combined with some delicious key stabs are all stomp-worthy though. Hard not to get down to this.

Marking the 15th anniversary of the Red Bull Music Academy Ralf Schmerberg’s film seeks to go beyond music, and ask questions about life itself. The full-length film dropped February 18 as a free digital release. Featuring Brian Eno, Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers, Richie Hawtin, James Murphy and more, What Difference Does It Make? A Film About Making Music explores the challenges that a life in music can bring. The film was shot at the 2013 Red Bull Music Academy in New York but the themes go far beyond that. The second single from Rebel Sketchy’s debut album Goodbye Gravity is So It Goes – a collaboration with London based singer Agne Motie, and Californian rapper Bukue One. The first remix on this package comes from Bert On Beats, an artist who has been making a name for himself in the Global Bass/Tropical scenes with releases on Mad Decent/Jeffee’s, Trouble & Bass, Enchufada and Man Recordings. Kwerk, a fast rising star in the breaks scene, takes the reigns for the second remix.

Rebel Sketchy – So it Goes feat Bukue One & Agne Motie

Before the reverberations of TECH 100’s onslaught have even faded away, Drumsound and Bassline Smith are back with Part 2.

First up is Phantasm, infused with echoes of hardcore from the intro. Growling bass and haymaker drums maintain the assault and, even when the track breaks down, high- tension stabs punch back in giving no time to let up. This bullies ravers into moving and accepts no refusal.

Then the moost apparently lightens with Make Some Noise. A warm sunrise intro draws you in, but then the calm is shattered. The eponymous vocal sample is the alarm signal before a driving mid- line and drums build to a tumultuous drop. When the rave needs adrenaline to the heart, here’s one to draw for.

Now the energy level’s appropriately red-lining, Drumsound and Bassline Smith keep it there with the VIP edit of Can U Feel It. The original has already earned its stripes in the parties of the world, and this mix twists it into the shape of an unstoppable steamroller. Bouncy percussion and syncopated bass plus the salute-to-the-old-skool sample selection make this a cut for the true heads.

Finally, we roll into Violator. This is call-to-action music. The intro hints at film-score elements, setting the scene for something dramatic. That drama is delivered with a monster drop. Drums, bass, swirling atmospherics and a spy-movie riff keep the plot building into an unmissable epic.

It’s still early in 2014, but Drumsound and Bassline Smith have already set the tone. Joining the dots between the past and future of drum and bass, the double-strike of TECH 100 sets the standard for the next century of Technique releases. So don’t blink, you’ll want to be watching.

Electronica

Russia’s Eastcolors has already featured on a wide range of labels, from Ram to Symmetry, from Revolution to BlackOut and now Addictive Behaviour. These two new offerings showcase his style, dedication and ability to warm the crowd and the dancefloor with ease. Electronica starts with an urgent, jazz-influenced drum fill, with electronics bouncing around the drumline. This flows into a build which drops into some Metalheadz-sounding craziness. The track works out into an industrial floor-filler, with sci-fi, cinematic touches and a bounding, insistent rhythm. Eastcolors has produced the track brilliantly, everything coming together as it should do to create one of the finest pieces of drum & bass you’ll hear this year or any year. Heavy, hard and ready to blow, Electronica is simply essential.

Mudguard

Eastcolors teams up with Noel on Mudguard, and you better prepare to get dirty on this one. A light, airy intro which takes us back to the Future Sound Of Russia days, drops into a murky, moody bass monster, laying down a bassline the likes of which you just don’t hear nowadays. Claustrophobic, confining and catastrophic, this one’ll have the heads going crazy. Totally immersive, this one not only sets up another world, it fully populates it with sound. The beats are crazy, the bass is perfect, and once again EC, with Noel, shows that the hype about him is totally justified.
