BILLY KENNY: WHAT YOU SAMPLE / I EAT BEATS [THIS AIN’T BRISTOL]

The relatively new imprint This Ain’t Bristol first caught our attention nearly a year ago with their first compilation – an impecable (and free!) 14 track collection of some of the finest bassy house the planet has ever seen. Since then the label has continued to impress DJs and dancefloors the world over.

The What You Sample / I Eat Beats EP is BILLY KENNY‘s first EP on his own co-run imprint, This Ain’t Bristol. What’s key to the release is its absolute largeness while simultaneously not overindulging. It’s also difficult to pigeon-hole the three tracks that lie within. Given Kenny’s repertoire of garage-influenced releases one might assume the EP would head there but those specific round and bouncy basslines simply aren’t there. Make no mistake, there’s an abundance of low end, but it manifests itself in a techy (What You Sample) and playful (I Eat Beats) manner. It doesn’t hurt that Claude VonStroke calls Ardalan’s remix on the release one of his favourite tunes ever.
