TBT 50 – Tangled Breaks – The first tape 1998
Back in 1996 a dude called, Steve Thorpe, started spinning tunes in some local bars and clubs in Manchester. After dropping an array of broken beat influenced music Steve joined a club night that was known for it’s House and Trance called, Tangled. He got the upstairs room to himself and the rest is history, Tangled Breaks was born and went onto become the longest running Breaks night not only nationally but internationally too! Steve brought to Manchester the who’s who of the Breaks scene to his night with the likes of Drumattic Twins, Soul Of Man, Elite Force, Meat Katie, Rennie Pilgrim and Krafty Kuts just being a few of the top names to have graced the decks.
This mix posted was the first ever mix Steve recorded for Tangled. Admitted by himself, the sound quality is not top notch as it’s ripped straight from the cassette pictured but fear not, the quality of the music on offer will make up for that! A mixture of Big Beat, Breaks and old skool beats all the way back from 1998 awaits which as I’m sure many of us will remember, was a pretty top year for music in general!
Steve closed the doors on Tangled last year with one last hoorah to celebrate it’s 21st birthday but if you think that’s the end of Breaks in Manchester then think again. Steve is part of the Lowdown & Dirty team who continuously bring many of the biggest names of the dance music world to the excellently equipped, Sound Control in Manchester. After the festival season they have an actioned packed Autumn ahead. For more info click HERE.
If you happen to be heading to The Beat Herder Festival this weekend you can catch Steve playing a one off Tangled Breaks on The Stumblefunk stage on Friday night. One set not to be missed!
