Starting off in the music industry as a drummer in his teens, Andy was playing regularly in his native Scotland, when he got interested in electronic dance music and production. After a few years of crude production, he widened his skills to encompass DJing, coming of age just as the Big Beat explosion was hitting down, and began playing regularly in his adopted home of Derby. As the years went on and Big Beat became Nu Skool Breaks, Andy kept his finger on the pulse running nights in and around Derby and regularly getting guest DJs from around the country to play at his ‘Ground Level’ nights.

At the end of 2006, the steady flow of tracks being given to him by guest DJs gave him an idea, to provide an outlet for this music, and so Ground Level Records was born. Not knowing anything about running a record label, everything was a process of trial and error, the only motto was that no corners where cut, the vinyl records would be cut by the best guys, the remixes by the hottest talent and the artwork accompanying the release would be fresh and innovative, making sure a product came out that oozed quality. This seemed to do the trick, and by January 2008, 10 releases in, Ground Level was nominated as best Breakthrough label at the International Breakbeat Awards, Breakspoll.

Now with over 70 releases in the catalogue Ground Level is preparing to celebrate it's 7th Birthday this July. Artists on the label include DJ Hero, Fisso & Spark, Beatsmack and Rebel Sketchy and the label's music has attracted listens and spins from DJs outside of the breaks scene from Laurent Garnier to MJ Cole! The music policy of Ground Level is music with a broken beat and an underground feel, and this manifesto has carved the label a following that far exceeds the niche of breakbeat.

Andy hosts the monthly Ground Level Podcast on iTunes, as well as playing at Ground Level nights up and down the country, and has played with many of the big players in the breaks and bass music scenes including Plump DJs, Stanton Warriors, Drumattic Twins, Foamo, Jack Beats and Calvertron.

Hello hello. The latest Electro Swing Roundup has been held up by her majesty’s thieving tax monkeys demanding some accounts being handed in. But fear thee not normal service has been resumed and we’ve got some blinding tracks for you!

As I may have mentioned, sumptuous preparations are in place for the Electro Swing Ball Feels The Love - and it’s going to be truly  exquisite. Come and join us for a night of vintage glamour at a Valentines Ball featuring the Electric Swing Circus, DJR, Bertie Dastard, Supabad, live circus acts, burlesque, boylesque and much more.

Right let’s get into it. First up an exclusive from Dr Cat…

Exclusive The Real Tuesday Weld. “Me and Mr Wolf (Dr Cat Remix)

Green Queen Music’s Dr Cat has kindly offered us the exclusive on his remix of The Real Tuesday Weld. It’s available for free from his facebook – in exchange for a quick like. Go do it!

Copperdollar Copperdollar, the award-winning performance company known for their cutting-edge and mixed-media immersive theatre productions inspired by Mexico’s Day Of The Dead have released a 15 track CD Copperdollar on Freshly Squeezed Records. Here’s the video from their shows and the album sampler is below. Available from Juno.

Free Music Loving this funked up remix of Elvis’ A Little Less Conversation:

House grooves and swing always seem to be a winner and I’m enjoying this with Don Mescal on remix duty:

Here’s a fun edit of Baked A Cake from DJ Tomahawk:

This ones good fun too. It’s called Slapstick and all it’s really missing are the clowns…

Extra Medium are building up for their album release on the 24th. In the mean time they’ve released this freebie:

New Releases Minimatic – Get Swingy EP Rather liking this new EP from Minimatic… Get Lucky reimagined in an easy listening but quite catchy way, the sweet disco house groove of Gonna Swing You and a nice retake on Black Betty. Nice.

S Strong & Funkanizer – Groove Gigolos EP S Strong & Funkanizer have come through with a new 4 track EP of ghetto swing flavoured big bass sounds. All have vintage elements mixed in with some heavy bass action. Available from Juno.

DJ Mixes Shout out to Continental Drifts Chris Tofu for this rather smashing mix covering a whole range of vintage styles all mixed and remixed. My personal find on it is The Lost Fingers tasty version of Pump Up The Jam. He’s included the whole track list so there’s no excuse not to give it a good check over:

Kiwistar has been mixing up his vintage styles with plenty of modern beats on this eclectic selection:

That’s it for this week. If you’ve got anything you’d like included in future roundups hit me up on soundcloud and if you’re around in the West Midlands hope to see you for our Valentines Ball. Laters.

DJ Bacon has long been a legend in the Brisbane breaks and hip-hop scene, showcasing a superb flair on the ones and twos, with his cutting, scratching and juggling being on par with the best in the business and his skills have not gone unnoticed with him supporting the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Ugly Duckling, The Roots, Hilltop Hoods and DJ Dexter to name but a few. The truth is that his performance in the DMC turntablist competition back in 2001 was a major influence in the purchase of my very first set of turntables and I include as one of my career highlights that I have been fortunate enough to share the booth (and a few beers) with this master of the wheels of steel. He recently upgraded his soundcloud account and has uploaded the absolute hottest classic b-boy, hip-hop and funk mix-tapes that are sure to fire up any party. I decided to feature this tidy 80′s Electro Miami Bass mix as it has hit my spot on so many levels but do yourselves a favour and checkout all the other fresh uploads on offer as you will not be disappointed.

“Plump DJs are arguably the wickedest confection to have oozed out from that veritable sweet-trolley-of-breaks imprint, Finger Lickin’ Records, and exactly a decade ago their supersized Eddie Bo-sampling platter Funk Hits the Fan not only did what it said on the menu, it sprayed across the dining room so damn hard it’s going to take another ten years and some serious pressure-steaming to get that sticky funk out.

And on this special anniversary who better to serve up a fresh, new, completely unofficial-but-irresistible slice of 10th birthday cake than Finger Lickin’ co-founder (and the label’s second-naughtiest act, Soul of Man) Jem Panufnik, aka Jem Stone?!”

Thanks, love, respect (and a huge dollop of cream) go of course to the Plump DJs whose permission was sought – and of course to Eddie Bo for allowing his vocals to be lisenced in the first place. Find the original Funk Hits the Fan by Plump DJs at www.fingerlickin.co.uk/music

This week in The Armory we're stoked to be featuring London's PuRe SX (aka Martin Flex) as recorded live from the Reporter Club in Kaliningrad, Russia on January 18th. Press play. Get down.

PuRe SX (aka Martin Flex) is one of the freshest names on the booty breaks scene, a producer who knows how to drop the 808 boom and send the bodies flying around the room. Blasting out of the thriving UK underground since 2008, he currently DJs all over the world from Florida to Spain, Russia to London and beyond.

Famous for low end terrorism in the form of his smash hits 212 Booty and Link Up alongside Deekline, as well as his recent bangers Sunglasses and Lift off the Roof, PuRe SX has picked up support for his music from all the top names on the scene, from Deekline to Stanton Warriors, Ed Solo to Lady Waks and Krafty Kuts to the Freestylers. Here is a producer and DJ with the skills to lock down the club for as long as he's on the turntables: a true original with an arsenal of floor-shaking weapons to get those hands up and keep them there 'til the break of dawn.
