I get asked a lot, “What is an edit”. After I answer “that it is simply taking an existing track and changing it a bit”, the follow up question is always “Why bother?”

Starting this month, I am going to pull together 10 of my favourite tracks that come across my computer screen, which then go into my virtual record bag aka my trusty USB stick, from the last month. Most of these will be found via Souncloud as it is my number one source for seeking out new work from the bubbling underground. The purpose of this is to help champion some of the talent that is out in the webisphere whom are seeking out classic cuts and reworking them to suit a modern day dance floor.

To those out there who fall into the same camp as my questioners on the topic of edits, please drop your preconceptions of slaughtering the sacred calves of music and open your ears to what the new wave of music producers are doing with some of the finest music released throughout the previous decades and discover that songs you thought you would never hear in clubs coming to life through a mixture of rearrangements, percussion overlays and tempo changes which are the key components of re-editing. When done correctly they can transform the most general of songs in to foot stomping classics.

After all, there is nothing new in producers doing this, the only difference now is that anyone who has a laptop and the desire to learn, as well as have the ability to listen to the same loop over and over without going insane, has the opportunity doing this. It is no longer the playground of the expensive studios exclusively.

Apart from the artistic challenge and ability to change records to fit with your DJ style, edits have also brought fun back into music for many.

My pick of the bag is the Rod Stewart track by the amazing Digital Visions, but here is my full chart.

1. Rod Steward // Passion (Digital Visions re-edit)
2. Sylvester // Tell Me (SanFranDisko re-edit)
3. The Zebras // For your Love (ADN edit)
4. Glenn Riccs // Keep on Dancing (Secousse Edit)
5. Thom Browne // Jamaica Funk (Lasso d’Amore Edit)
6. King Tutt // Keep on (CBS edit)
7. Daft Punk // Life Back To Music (Rayko Hypnotic Disco Edit)
8. The BBQ Band // Starr-Let (Dr Packer Rework)
9. Arsenii // Son of the Sun (edit)
10. David Matthews // You keep me hanging on (DjA re-drum)

To make this even jollier, I have mixed these together to make it into a listening session for you to enjoy at your leisure. As an extra bonus, I will be providing an exclusive edit each month to support this feature and it is free to download just for the readers and followers of the LSM blog, this time – My Mine // Hypnotic Tango (Frictional Heroes Edit). See links to both below:

Tracklist:

1. Arsenii // Son of the Sun (edit)
2. Glenn Riccs // Keep on Dancing (Secousse Edit)
3. King Tutt // Keep on (CBS edit)
4. Daft Punk // Life Back To Music (Rayko Hypnotic Disco Edit)
5. The Zebras // For your Love (ADN edit)
6. Sylvester // Tell Me (SanFranDisko re-edit)
7. David Matthews // You keep me hanging on (DjA re-drum)
8. The BBQ Band // Starr-Let (Dr Packer Rework)
9. Rod Steward // Passion (Digital Visions re-edit)
10. Thom Browne // Jamaica Funk (Lasso d’Amore Edit)

T>I, one of a handful of producers responsible for bringing raw 90’s vibes back to drum & bass without following the same old route of ‘back to the old school’.

Championed by DJ Hype and DJ Rap, T>I has already had a huge amount of hits on the underground and his latest pending releases under Serial Killaz will be no exception.

If you know your upfront drum and bass or not, you will have most certainly heard plenty of T>I’s tracks being supported by most if not all of the A list DJ circuit.

Virtual record boxes have continued to be stocked with dubplate after dubplate by one of the hardest working producers our scene has seen for years.

Don’t get it twisted, this isn’t a ragga jungle explosion with a plethora of Amen beats - this is pure rolling sublow drum and bass and it’s coming in not one but two parts! Sample spotters hold tight.

High energy beats and bass combined with mid 90’s production influences are in abundance. Top scale bass lines that flip the script from ‘Changes’, deep and dark vibes in the form of ‘Hammerhead’ and music to make even the stiffest of ravers shuffle in the form of ‘Watcha Man’. This EP has it all and it’s taking no prisoners.

‘Circuits’ is being released as two separate EP’s, part one incoming 10th Junefollowed by part two later on 24th June. Watch out for a bonus track from the album which is soon to be offered as a free download via the Serial Killaz Soundcloud. This is a massive package and certainly not one to sleep on.

Coming soon on the Serial Killaz release schedule is an EP from their very own Yorkshire ripper, Kitcha.

Watch the ride..

Inna NICE UP! Fashion by Various Artists

Undoubtedly one of the most iconic and legendary reggae labels to come out of the UK, Fashion Records has a rich and deep history that reaches far beyond the world of reggae.

The brainchild of John MacGillivray and Chris Lane, two music devotees who started the Dub Vendor market stall in Clapham Junction selling imported reggae and dub vinyl during the late 70s (which later went on to spawn the hugely popular Dub Vendor shops), a dub cutting studio and label was set up in 1980 and started generating hits instantly, regularly topping the UK reggae charts and attracting attention further afield. Soon a recording studio was built, which served as a drop-in for most of the Jamaican stars passing through London at the time.

Horace Andy, Johnnie Clarke, Alton Ellis, Frankie Paul, Junior Delgado and many more household names all spent time in the A-Class studios during the early days, although it was the stars of the new UK reggae explosion that really put the label on the map. Alongside artists such as Dee Sharp, Keith Douglas, Papa Face & Bionic Rhona, the label was a springboard for talents such as Asher Senator, Macka B, Andrew Paul and Smiley Culture, the latter scoring a top 20 hit and a couple of appearances on Top Of The Pops with his 1984 single "Police Officer".

Going from strength to strength, it was the chart explosion of dancehall in the early 90s that saw more international names come flocking to the label and more hits racking up - far too many to list here, but a brief glance through the discography shows Cutty Ranks, Papa San, General Levy, Top Cat, Tenor Fly, Daddy Freddy and Wayne Wonder all recording sides for the label. Subsequently another more uniquely English style of dance music began using acapella samples from the label; jungle. Based around the soundsystem style of Jamaican music, with an emphasis on the cutting drums and heavy basslines, young jungle producers used many of the tracks recorded and played by the previous generation as the music’s backbone, the vocals given new life by the rudimentary samplers being used in bedroom studios all over the land.

Fast forward 25 years and those reverberations are still being felt today - drum & bass, dubstep, hip hop, trap and almost any other sub-genre of what many now refer to as "bass music" has the DNA of reggae and dancehall running through it, so its only right to expect a little payback. A&R'd by music fanatic and owner of the NICE UP! record label, Jon Sheppard - "Inna NICE UP! Fashion" aims to bring new life to some of these legendary tracks by having modern day producers rework them in their own style and re- introduce them to a new audience.

From the frantic breakbeats of rave-revivalist Special Request and the bottom end sonics of Radio 1's Toddla T & Melé, to the modern minimalist dancehall-tech of Machinedrum and the digital dub drone of The Bug, there is plenty to get excited about here.

Poland's Radikal Guruserves up some classic dubstep, Germany's Jahtari crew take it back into 80s nostalgia with their 8-bit dancehall style, whilst modern reggae producersWrongtom, Jstar and Mr Benn all show why they are on the forefront of the UK reggae revival. The tempo gets upped for some heavier jungle inspired remixes from Aries & Gold Dubs, Serial Killaz and festival favourites Dub Pistols, giving a little bit of something for everybody.

The diversification of D n B over recent years has allowed producers of the scene to really let loose and really hone in on their own particular sound and one producer who has made the most of this is, Sub Zero. Since he started out on his own back in 2009, he has gone from strength to strength with his music, blending together the dark and minimal side of D n B with the big room sound to produce hit after hit, with many of those hits helping pave the way to signing an exclusive deal with DJ Hype and DJ Pascal‘s label, Playaz Recordings. As well as packing out venues around the globe, he’s also picked up support from D n B royalty such as, Goldie, Andy C and Grooverider and with names like that biggin’ up your work, you know you’re on to a winner.

The music we have for you comes from Sub Zero’s latest EP ‘The Collab’. The EP has seen him get together with 4 high-rolling producers from the world of D n B, Majistrate, Jaydan, Dub Motion and DJ Limited, to create 4 brand new tracks with incredible power and precision. ‘Weapon of Choice’ with Majistrate and ‘Fear’ with Jaydan are two of those tracks that have a that combination of being dark and huge all at the same time. Proper stompers! Just to show he’s not all about big room tunes, his collab with Dub Motion on ‘Oh Girl’ sees them head down the strictly soulful route with a heavy vocal presence and finishing the EP off is ‘How To Act’ with DJ Limited which heralds a return to the grimy and gritty vibe with a shed load of bass! If D n B is your thing, these 4 tracks are must haves!

The Soundcloud player posted is an EP sampler so for complete convenience here are the tracks and times :

1: Sub Zero & Majistrate – Weapon of Choice
2: Sub Zero & Jaydan – Fear – 1:06
3: Sub Zero & Dub Motion – Oh Girl – 2:12
4: Sub Zero & DJ Limited – How to Act – 3:18
