I get asked a lot, “What is an edit”. After I answer “that it is simply taking an existing track and changing it a bit”, the follow up question is always “Why bother?”

Starting this month, I am going to pull together 10 of my favourite tracks that come across my computer screen, which then go into my virtual record bag aka my trusty USB stick, from the last month. Most of these will be found via Souncloud as it is my number one source for seeking out new work from the bubbling underground. The purpose of this is to help champion some of the talent that is out in the webisphere whom are seeking out classic cuts and reworking them to suit a modern day dance floor.

To those out there who fall into the same camp as my questioners on the topic of edits, please drop your preconceptions of slaughtering the sacred calves of music and open your ears to what the new wave of music producers are doing with some of the finest music released throughout the previous decades and discover that songs you thought you would never hear in clubs coming to life through a mixture of rearrangements, percussion overlays and tempo changes which are the key components of re-editing. When done correctly they can transform the most general of songs in to foot stomping classics.

After all, there is nothing new in producers doing this, the only difference now is that anyone who has a laptop and the desire to learn, as well as have the ability to listen to the same loop over and over without going insane, has the opportunity doing this. It is no longer the playground of the expensive studios exclusively.

Apart from the artistic challenge and ability to change records to fit with your DJ style, edits have also brought fun back into music for many.

My pick of the bag is the Rod Stewart track by the amazing Digital Visions, but here is my full chart.

1. Rod Steward // Passion (Digital Visions re-edit)
2. Sylvester // Tell Me (SanFranDisko re-edit)
3. The Zebras // For your Love (ADN edit)
4. Glenn Riccs // Keep on Dancing (Secousse Edit)
5. Thom Browne // Jamaica Funk (Lasso d’Amore Edit)
6.  King Tutt // Keep on (CBS edit)
7. Daft Punk // Life Back To Music (Rayko Hypnotic Disco Edit)
8. The BBQ Band // Starr-Let (Dr Packer Rework)
9. Arsenii // Son of the Sun (edit)
10. David Matthews // You keep me hanging on (DjA re-drum)

To make this even jollier, I have mixed these together to make it into a listening session for you to enjoy at your leisure. As an extra bonus, I will be providing an exclusive edit each month to support this feature and it is free to download just for the readers and followers of the LSM blog, this time – My Mine // Hypnotic Tango (Frictional Heroes Edit). See links to both below:
