One of the most rock & roll acts out there, Barry Ashworth’s merry band of reprobates — the unstoppable Dub Pistols — are staying true to form with their sixth long-player. It’s called ‘White Lines’, although Barry is keen to stress that the title isn’t some sort of blatant drug reference. “It’s about the number of white lines we see on motorways and at airports when we’re travelling around all the time,” he says.

The Dubs continue to be one of the busiest bands on the circuit. Seemingly no music festival is complete without their riotous blend of ska, dub, hip-hop, electro, breakbeat, punk and drum & bass. Good times are guaranteed when the Dub Pistols blaze in to fire up the joint, and they’ll party all night — if you let them — until the motorway sun comes up with the morning light.

Over they years the Dubs have earned their ticket to ride the white line highway — and if you aren’t already hooked, baby, it’s nobody else’s fault. They originally grew out of the DJ sound system that Barry Ashworth started with cohort Jason O’Bryan in the mid-90s.
Along with contemporaries the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim, the Dubs initially surfed the late ‘90s big beat wave with tracks like ‘Cyclone’, ‘Westway’ and ‘There’s Gonna Be A Riot’ before swerving into the more political ‘Six Million Ways To Live’ album after the Millennium and their first hook-up with unforgettable Specials frontman Terry Hall.

The procession of guest vocalists who’ve joined them in the intervening decade or so reads like a roll call of urban legends. UK hip-hopper Rodney P, late reggae great Gregory Isaacs, Freak Power man Ashley Slater, Beats International’s Lindy Layton, acid house original Justin Robertson, the sweet tones of Horace Andy, UK rapper Akala, TK from New York, Red Star Lion from the West Indies, Dan Bowskills… the list goes on. Despite these top collaborators, they’ve somehow still managed to remain a cohesive unit, and it’s for their riotous sense of fun, entertainment value and tireless ability to make crowds jump that the Dubs have carved a niche for themselves. Verily, they’re something of a phenomenon.

‘White Lines’ is more of a party album than the conscious vibes of previous LP ‘Worshipping The Dollar’, and also has its fair share of top-notch guests. Reggae don Earl 16, eminent hip-hopper Seanie T, in-demand rhymer Serocee — as well as regulars TK, Darrison, Sir Real, Ashley Slater, Rodney P and Barry Ashworth himself on vocals — all make an appearance, as well as the dubwise horns of Tim Hutton.

This neuro-bouncy-bassy twist on Caravan Palace’s “Je m’amuse” really does tick all the boxes – “Can I play this at peak time?” YES, “Well produced?” YES, “Does it make me feel like I should be holding a cigar, sipping a Martini, and sporting a prohibition-era pure silk suit, while a gaggle of flappers show me just enough thigh to be considered somewhat racey?” YES! JPod – Now if you know me, you may know about my worrying addiction to fried chicken, ribs, and anything coated in peanut butter; but when this man’s in the kitchen I can order nothing but the soul-food special of the day. Legendary veteran JPOD (the beat chef) kindly dishes out his remix of 1 Giant Leap’s “Inspiration” with sumptuous flavor by the bucket-load. But flavour’s not enough for this man, this perfectly crafted “World Music” style masterpiece is produced to a standard some can only dream of – keeping the Earthly soul of the original but adding crisp drums and an astounding bass sound. SCOUR #93 EXCLUSIVE #2: Chalk those hands, polish your bat (Oh, Matron!), and get ready for a home run, because next to step up is German hard-hitter, Qnoe; delivering a fine swing to knock competitors straight out of the park. Flipping Greg Nice’s “Set it off” with a dub-reggae skank, we’re certainly on to a winner here! While Spinforth’s out there popping Scour cherries, he still finds the time time to give us all a little pork, as such, we welcome our second of this week’s Scourgins™; Sausagefinger. Bred wild in the Arubian wastelands, and known only to the locals and tourists as “Frank Furter”, his real identity remains a mystery. This time laying his meaty digits on Grizmatic’s gritty, bass-heavy “My People”, and converting it to a tight, sub-powered Electro-Soul roller with a familiar vocal cut to keep things extra spicy. A man who needs no introduction. If you don’t already know Gramatik, get to know. Laying down a tasty, modern day Bootsy-style funk weapon, this has been on repeat all day at X-Ray Towers. Next up we have Re-funk hero, Late Knight, masterfully taking to Big Daddy Kane’s “2 Da Good Tymz”. The hard hitting ‘pella, finely blended with that classic Honey Dripped glaze creates a laid back funk-filled infusion that’s almost irresistable. Deep beyond the depths of Berlin’s infamous house & techno scene lays a mysterious beast in the form of aleksey! Bringing funky-fresh re-rubs to the table that pack some serious dancefloor punch. This “funky burrito bootleg” of The Pharcyde’s classic “Ya Mama” tastes as good as it sounds (and sounds as good as it tastes). SCOUR #93 EXCLUSIVE #3: Warning, floor-filler alert!!! This next offering come from a Scour Mega Star, a fine young specimin who tore up this year’s festival scene – if his lady-melting sideburns, and explosive DJ style weren’t enough for you, he also merits in being (in my opinion) one of the most versatile and promising young producers in our scene. I’m talking, of course, about Father Funk. Yet another bass-fueled banger with an oh-so-fluid funk from Cumbria’s finest! 105bpm ▼

Absolute fire from GRiZ (ft. The Floozies). The Whoozies?? look ‘em up, it’s yet another top tip from Spin’! Some big-boy business from another Scour Records Super Star – Leo (UK), you never cease to amaze me. Some may not know, but Leo built a cyborg version of Glen Miller that he kept in a cage and poked with a drumstick. Eventually, the Glenborg grew concious and broke free, the untamed swing-beast is tearing up soundsystems and raising havoc on dancefloors worldwide. Party people in the house, this is a big room, late night weapon. We all know the time when you need something filthy, but familiar, well DJ Dylan Sanders delivers this honestly titled “Drag and Drop Mash” of Pyramyth’s “Cowbell Rock” and the ever-crowd-hyping House of Pain ‘pella. It’s everybody favourite Shake & Bake Scour veteran, Nottingham’s one and only LEYGO! Coming through with a lively mid-tempo re-boot of Duck Sauce’s feel-good hit “It’s You” which offers the kind of warmth that can only be likened to climbing into the pouch of a funky / friendly kangaroo, and is packed with enough bounce to back up my whimsical metaphore! Selected by Cab Canavaral and Tony Maroni there’s a good range of stuff for everyone on here with a great line up of artists including big names like Bart & Baker, Skeewiff, Grant Lazlo and Dunkelbunt, along with fresh talent such as Extra Medium, The Jenova Collective, Francis Red and Caspar. Parov Stelar – The Art Of Sampling

The new album by Parov Stelar is out now. It’s a double album put together for the UK market and contains some new tracks and some old favorites. It’s definitely worth checking out for the new stuff, including this rather nice mix sampling Marvin Gaye:
