Cedar Senior & Imagine This - 'Funk I'm Kickin' EP' - ***OUT NOW***

“Like a gang of body popping B-boy lions on a patch of linoleum in the Serengeti, it is with the greatest pride that we at Scour Records commence the unleashing of our patiently awaited Artist Series, the first of which being our debut original release.

Cedar Senior & Imagine This (I.T. to us mortals) team up to create a tune of such ‘stompy-stompy’ magnitude that it has already sown the seeds for complete world peace. Everyone who’s job is marching won’t be able to help but adopt this tune as their new anthem, so strong is the urge to stompy-stomp around when this is playing. Once the sonics of joy get their hooks sunk in no one will ever be able to get angry with anyone ever again. Of course this does mean we should expect large and well drilled groups of ants, Girl Guides and Morris Men to possibly become militarised, but it’s a price well worth paying as far as we’re concerned!

Remix work on this EP brings out the best of the Scour’s superstars, plus a very special guest. DJP‘s Bob James-esque silky brass work is simply exquisite, Father Funk turns out his most mature and understated piece to date, J-Sound uses all his production flex, and Howla just makes everyone pregnant he’s so fertile.

Hear them roar!”

AfroQBen - Fallin' For Funk - DJ Mix

Well my friends, New Years Eve is fast approaching and I tell ya what the key is wherever you are.. find somewhere that you know is going to be playing music that you love, make sure you are with some friends, don’t drink too much and pass out before midnight and you can’t go wrong! If you are in the UK there is only one place to be.. BRISTOL! I can’t say too much at this stage but it’s going to be BIG!!

Speaking of things that are big and amazing, have you seen the Fro on AfroQben? It’s a thing of beauty, quite like his music. I had to investigate and find out if it had any magical powers.. kind of like if Erykah Badu got off with Dumbledore and created a cosmic funk wizard. You never know..

AfroQBen - Fallin' For Funk - DJ Mix

SAMMY: You are from Portland in the US.. tell us about the music scene there, what should we look out for when we come a visiting?

AFROQBEN: Portland has a little something for everyone. The biggest shows are mostly electronic music, ranging from House, Trap, Dubstep, and those unique West Coast Bass producers. Ghetto Funk isn’t really that well known, and the big promoters don’t book funky acts too often. I played the biggest halloween show in Portland called “Howl” this year, and opened up for Fort Knox Five, which was a rare treat to have them in town, and JPod also played. I may just have to start putting on my own shows to get more of the funky acts I like, because I’m sure people would love it, but they don’t know about it nor have the chance to see it live.

SAMMY: You should definately start your own shows, thats a great idea! Where do you mainly play gigs? And where in the globe would you really like to play in the future?

AFROQBEN: I’ve been putting most of my focus into production over the years, but have been playing more and more shows lately. Over the summer I played my first two canadian shows after Shambhala Music Festival. I’d really like to play Canada more, because they have a huge love for the funk, and the vibe is awesome up there. I’m hoping to play Shambhala 2014, because out of all the festivals I’ve been to, it is top. I played a few west coast festivals this last year, and my club shows range from Seattle down to L.A. My plan is to keep releasing music, and get more involved in the festival circuit for 2014 as well as more club gigs over the winter/spring. I would love to see more of the world and travel while playing shows to make it feasible. You know, Europe, Canada, Australia, and South America for starters… Playing more internationally interests me more than traveling around the United States. The West Coast has the vibe though, and would like to get down to San Francisco/L.A. area more often. Thats where it’s really happening.

SAMMY: That sounds like a great plan, we can’t wait for you to come visit us in Europe! You released a remix album this year of your “Liquid Gold” album and had some big names remix your tracks. Did you have a favorite remix from the album?

AFROQBEN: It was great to work with producers from all over the globe and get new versions of my tunes. I was pretty happy with them all, and its too hard to name one since they were all so unique. My top 4 were if I can is, Qdup – Massive Move Forward, Drumspyder – Dream The Impossible, Empresarios – Cafe and Zebuel – Dirty Heart.

SAMMY: In this mix you teased us with some huge unreleased tracks, can you tell us a bit more about when we can get our funk-loving mitts on them, and tell us about this forthcoming EP!

AFROQBEN: I’ve been sitting on a lot of those tracks for a while, and will be released this fall, so I thought I’d put them on my mix to get a early start on the release hype. The collaboration track I did with Lafa Taylor, who was the vocalist for the tune “Everyone Jump” off the album “Liquid Gold”, will be released this thursday, the 14th, on SF based label, Street Ritual. The “Hypnotize Me” track, which I’m really excited about, will be up for a free download along with a Funk Hunters video to go with it, in the next couple of weeks. There will also be a “Jam Packed” EP, with the release date still unknown, but sometime this fall/winter. Trying to find the right label for support, but may just do my own bandcamp free release. This 4 song EP, has two tracks featuring Lafa Taylor, and 2 tracks featuring Hip-Hop legends Aceyalone and Myka 9 from the group “Freestyle Fellowship”. If you don’t know who they are, they were pioneers in the underground hip-hop scene and influenced so many well know MC’s underground to main stream.

SAMMY: Wow that’s big! I love the Freestyle fellowship, especially that track hot potatoe.. they are funky cats! Where do you get your inspiration for making music?

AFROQBEN: Music has been in my family for generations, and was always something that came naturally to me. My grandfather made his first guitar out of a cigar box, gut strings and a broom stick. He became an amazing jazz guitarists and played strictly by ear. I’ve been playing the guitar for about 20 years now, and picked up the bass, drums, keys and percussion along the way. I started out, only having my brothers cd’s to listen to which gave me the influence of Classic Rock and Metal. By midway though high school, I heard “Herbie Handcock – Chameleon” through a friend, and those sounds blew my mind, and from then on, I left Metal and developed a love for 70′s Funk and Reggae, and started digging for that sick funk, as well as Jazz and Hip-Hop. I’m also hugely influenced by current electronic music- Ghetto Funk, House, Dubstep, Trap, and Downtempo. I think every genre has something good to offer. When people say they “hate house” or “hate trap”, its because ever genre gets saturated with everyone trying to make it, which leads to a lot of crap and only a small percentage of quality. Thats why certain genres get bad raps. So, i’m influenced by them all to some extent. That’s why if you listen my music, it may sound random and diverse. Nothing really sounds the same because there are so many different influences. My main goal is to make people dance and be happy through my music, so that’s also another inspiration as well as what I listen to.

SAMMY: That’s incredible, your grandfather was a genius! Well said about genres too, that is a really good perspective. And lastly,  apart from the ability to produce amazing funky music and making women throw their underwear at you when you DJ, does your afro have any special super powers?

AFROQBEN: Well, I wish I had super powers but not really. Having an afro coincidently fits my love for old school funk. Rhythm and a musical ear has been a super power if I had to say I had one. I’ve been playing instruments for a long time, and producing since 2002. The music production has led me to not play my instruments as much as if I had stuck with pursuing the band thing, but making beats became more fulfilling because I didn’t have to rely on anyone else, and could get all the parts that I wanted, and have something left to show for. I’m not a master of any instruments or producing, but can only keep at it and do what I love. Hopefully the powers will get more super as the years progress. The funk in me will never die and will always be the main core of my music.

Thanks man.. sounds like you have funk flowing in your veins, anyone that listened to your music could tell you that! Keep up the amazing work and I’m sure I can speak for everyone when I say we are really looking forward to your new material coming out.

Bmore & Breaks Mix July 08

Stumbled across this mix from 2008 the other day and really enjoyed it so thought id share. 30 mins of Bmore & Breaks uptempo action from a time when it seems I gave each track a bit more time to breathe..would probably be a 5 minute mix if did it again today. But think the difference is what I enjoyed. Think break all up in the place!

Fat Harry Meats… The Cuban Brothers

The Brothers have just released an album called ‘Yo Bonita’. Of course it’s utterly amazing. If you’ve ever spent any time in the world of The Cuban Brothers then you know there is no-one else like them on the planet, their live shows are simply solid gold and everything they do is incredible. They could turn Prime Ministers questions into Club Tropicana within minutes; Glenda Jackson would swing through the chamber on a chandelier in a gimp mask and a pair of otter skin thigh high boots screaming that the drinks were free…

That’s the Cuban effect. I’m amazed they’ve allowed me the opportunity to interview Mike Cuban, to do it justice i’m only wearing a swimming cap, baby oil, speedos, marigolds and veruca slippers.

FH: Hi Mike, can I call you Mike? I feel I should call you Sir Mikeerino or the Love Bullet, I can’t call the funkiest, swingiest, hippest hoppiest chief Cuban Brother just Mike …that would be like saying “Budge up Jesus!” on the bus.

MC: Haraldo you beautifully teta’ed count…

FH: ……I don’t know what that means, but i’m aroused and if i’m not mistaken, possibly pregnant. Teta’s…do you mean ‘my potatoes’? I usually carry three with me, here look, this one looks like a…

MC: Teta’s is Spanish for tits Haraldo

FH: :blushes: Why thank you, it’s this unseasonably chilly weather. Mike Cuban/The Love Bullet, you are a Don, your legs exude more sex appeal than Barry White and Luther Vandross. How do you get up in the morning knowing that men and women and a myriad animals want to be in you?

MC: I never get up in the morning EVER so I don’t have this problem you are proffering…usually I can start being fellated around 3/3.30pm by whomever is present regardless of gender …I like to get up to get down then it’s into shower followed by a nice long bath that I share with my 7 Koi carp then back into the shower to scrub my naked body with pumice humous then it’s time for a bath a very long soak this time enjoying a few Rons (rum) to start the day then it’s straight up and into the shower to let the jets energise my fire-hazards …of course I’m then out, dried and into the bath to answer some of my fan mail from ladies of all generations but mostly the ones who tell me about the CHANGE and how it effects them.

FH: I knew you were a Koi carp kind of guy! :highfive: The Cuban Brothers are world renowned B-boy funsters and party block rockers, we’ve all been looking forward to the release of Yo Bonita if only to graze over it and pick out the one or two stand out tracks, but it’s not like that at all. There isn’t one track any less amazing than another and i’m not even blowing smoke up your bum. You must be just so damn proud! I listen to it and decide ‘this is definitely my favourite’ until the next tune comes on and i’m thinking ‘Nope, bugger! THIS is my favourite’ and so on, do you have a favourite?

MC: Gracias my over-generous in the cock department friend!

FH: Thanks fella but honestly, these speedos are of quite a generous cut…

MC: The songs are like children so to pick a favourite is very difficult as I wouldn’t want to upset myself or the tune itself …but let’s just say to get Kurtis Blow out of retirement and on “Roll call” was indeed a nice feeling and to have the father of rap on the joint with Abdominal MC and myself was beyond ILL.

FH: Did you get to share studio time with any of the legends? Just how did you snag them to appear on the album? Did you hang around outside their apartments with a van and ask them to help you in with a sofa like in Silence of the Lambs? “Omar puts on the lotion or Omar gets the hose” styleeee?

MC: All of the guests on the record I have respected as artists for some time and have appeared on the same bill at one time or another so they knew our styles and that regardless of the fun, physical nature of our Steez that we are music cats first and foremost, so after I had flown most of them around the world to record in Toolshed, The Wendy house and my own personal studio Miguelito’s Lab, everyone was relaxed and able to have a fantastic time recording and partying….I think you can hear that vibe on the record.

FH: It shines through, track after track. I imagine it’s the Koi carp effect, or your aura of rampant fertility. I’ve filed your album under a category i’ve called ‘Golden like a fox’, how on earth did you find such talented players?

MC: Blasssings!!! (said in Non ironic accent) this band I put together to tour with the Godfather .. Mr dynamite…Mr James Brown in 06 as I had snagged us the support for his Oz and Asia tour….amazingly. They are the best players in the UK in my opinion but are from all over; French Guyana, Barima Asante on keys; Germany, Magnus Box – my Ace on the Bass – all the cats are beyond dope and most of them were Amy Winehouse’s band god rest her soul, but mine first.

FH: :Removes swimming cap – bows low: Ultra respect. How did you not explode when people sent you their vocals? Dame Mica Paris’ voice alone would probably have made my spleen implode.

MC: She is the illest most powerful female vocalist this side of Aunty Jocelyn Brown and very warm and funny. I love Mica and as you say she kills it every time guy. Also Omar is one of my fave vocalists ever so to get him to bless the project was amazin tin crescenting.

I have a meeting right now so I’ll return to interview laters yes?

FH: That’s cool, i’ll put my cap back on and get a few laps in, try and sharpen up these pecs for the ladies.

MC: …Hello my friend

FH: Mike! Hola!

MC: Are you well potato man?

FH I can’t feel my arms…

MC: Here, look at these pictures of me in my pants…

FH: Pow! Strong stuff! Can you see a time when you can tour the album with the Brothers and the full live band? Because that is something the world must see.

MC: Yes friend! Next year i’ll take the full CB’s out on a world tour playing the worlds finest garden centres starting of at Hemi’s Flora in Rotorua New Zealand and taking in every major tropical plant vendor in both hemispheres…..I also think we’ll do a 15 date UK tour in normal venues just for the fun as there’s not much money floating about with 11 guys on the road who are all into drugs, gambling, whores and bonsai rearing! We will soon be coming in your town starting March 2014

FH: Have you ever punched a bear or had any kind of altercation with an animal?

MC: As far as fighting animals goes, I have wrestled a lot of dogs in my time…

FH: Me too

MC: …usually while defecating in someone ‘s garden while drunk. Hey, we’ve all done it brothers and sisters!

FH: Stooling! Super cool!

MC: But seriously, we are all animal lovers in Los Hermanos…apart from Kennny (Kengo-San) the bastard! He will just eat shit… not literally of course but he eats stuff thats still living or in its death throes… part of the Japanese culture apparently it’s why there was no future for his mother and I. She tried to serve me live crayfish after a pumping session in 81…I mean Jesu e Christu – to coin an english phrase – I like a laugh but i fuck’n hate a pantomime’ and well, you know, it was time to move on……Ostia!!!

FH: Credit where it’s due though, there’s not an ounce of fat on the fella and his barnet is shiny like Magnum PI’s chest. He’s fast too, snaps out the dance moves like a hungry snake…he’s probably eaten one of them too

MC: I was once bitten by a snake in Mexico but thats another story

FH: Do tell…

MC: Heraldo! Hush now, I can’t give too much away, it’s ALL in my book ‘Miguelito!!’ – The man, the myth, THE MAN’! Published by Firehazards in hardback.

FH: Top shelf material? 50 shades of Los Hermanos? Can’t wait! Miguel Cuban, thank you for your time, it’s been an absolute honour! Where can we catch you next?

MC: Look out for The Brothers in new Nick Frost movie ‘Cuban Fury’ out in February….and myself starring in ‘Sunshine on Leith’, Dexter Fletchers new film, playing Bronco.

FH: Will do. One last request. Can we moonwalk?

MC: One day my friend, but now I must fly. Muchos Respectos!
