The Glitch Mob – Love Death Immortality

It should be hard to go through the world of breaks and glitch without hearing about The Glitch Mob at some point—for good reason. Formed in 2006, they released their first album Drink the Sea in 2010 with moderate success, which led to a cover story being written about them on eMusician. After “Drive it Like You Stole it” hit number 2 on XL8R8’s top downloaded songs of 2010 list, it was clear that The Glitch Mob would help popularize genres such as glitch-hop and dubstep.
Some might disagree with The Glitch Mob’s impact on musical culture, but it is hard to ignore the effect it has had on people’s lives throughout the world. Back in 2012, a man named Grant Korgan tried to recover from a broken back with partial paralysis, defying doctors that claimed he would never walk again. His friend had written the Mob about his condition and he returned from the hospital to see signed shirts, drumsticks, and their album Drink the Sea waiting for him.
Korgan put it best himself when he said “The drop hit and I started crying—pure emotional release. They pushed me to go as hard as humanly possible.” In time, with the help of his music, Korgan regained the feeling in his legs and even went on a trip to the south pole. He carried The Glitch Mob with him the entire way and planted their flag at the pole. Talk about music having the power to inspire!
The Glitch Mob has also become popular in the gaming world and has been featured in numerous videos online. Most recently, their track “Can’t Kill Us” was used for the character trailer for the hugely popular upcoming game Watchdogs. They are also a common hit for gamers in the world of poker, being used for videos by
. PartyPoker on YouTube did a quick survey of players at a Copenhagen event and found that many players prefer to
, even at live games. While their musical taste is as diverse as their backgrounds, bands such as The Glitch Mob are commonly named by players. Fans of the genre know that glitch music can be epic and motivating, and many players believe music helps them with their game, whether that is simply working out at the gym or avoiding tilt at the tables.
The band most recently released their second album, Love Death Immortality, topping Billboard’s Electronic/Dance chart. This album features the previously mentioned hit “Can’t Kill Us,” which sold thousands in the first weeks of its release. While the album is a bit of a transition from their first release, the elements of glitch-hop are still clearly present in The Glitch Mob’s latest work. While the album features ample use of vocals and has a more rock-’n'-roll feel at times, it is still definitely worth a look for any glitch-hop fan, especially those who enjoyed the Mob’s first album.
The band’s newest album is a perfect piece for live shows, and it’s no surprise that they continue to sell out concerts during their tour this season. As their live shows were a big part of what originally them popular, it is fitting for them to push their talent to the live arenas with their latest album. Fans surely aren’t disappointed, and The Glitch Mob has no problem filling up a house. The UK can look forward to them at the end of May and August as their tour takes them around Europe and the US.
If you want to hear what The Glitch Mob has been up to lately, they released a few samples on Soundcloud.

Mav - Sounds of the Deep

And now for a simply stunning album of DnB from the more atmospheric and melodic side of the spectrum, don’t call it ‘Liquid’, that’s not doing justice to the sheer diversity of sounds here and there is nothing ‘run of the mill’ going on, each of the 15 tracks featured are finely crafted masterpieces in their own right, Mav is an established name in the scene and has been for a considerable time which makes this debut LP all the bigger and better.
For this opus, Mav has called in an array of DnB’s finest to perform remix duties, highlights include the tearout vibes of ‘Makati Oasis’, the euphoric ‘The Dolphin and the Bassline’, the incredible amen workout ‘Break is the Legend ‘, the deep melodic drumfunk of ‘Trigger the Rabbit’, Paul SG’s Jazzy remix of ‘Open Your Mind’, and the amazing fusion of lush pads and dark jungle warp bass that is the original ‘Open Your Mind’ This album is an absolute must have.
There is a free promo mix to wet your appetite, do check it out!!!

The Doors vs Kasabian – Roadhouse Runner (SCAPO Mashup)
Italy’s Scrapo has been at it again! This time mashing up 2 rock anthems, one new and one old! He is not the first to take on ‘The Doors – Roadhouse Blues’ as any fan of The Crystal Method will know … this combined with ‘Kasabian – Shoot The Runner’ works beautifully.

Feedback -
Mafia Kiss (@mafia-kiss)
808 Breaks is a really refreshing sample pack for the breaks scene. The beats cover a lot of different, relevant styles the scene has to offer right now ranging from the classic booty break to the more recent bass style break. It’s packed with some seriously good percussion & top loops ready to fill the void on that beat you just can’t finish. Really impressed with this sample pack from Free Breaks Blog, well done. – Mafia Kiss
Martin Flex / Pure SX (@martinflex)
The new pack from Free Breaks is perfect for getting to grips with the booty breaks and 808 sounds. Well set out and really easy to use, this will be your first stop when you’re writing your next track
Se7en Deadly Breaks (@se7en-deadly-breaks)
Great sample pack. Love the 808 sounds and bass. There are lots of samples to work with. Fully supporting this and the blog. Also looking forward to using the one hit sounds.
Expect to hear some clips and sounds from the pack in our next release. Good work!
Skeewiff (@skeewiff)
Took the Sample Pack for a test drive yesterday. I was able to very quickly and easily construct the drum kit I was looking for from the well labelled one shots, and even found inspiration from the (also well labelled) loops. The SFX are great & the Vocal chops were an unexpected bonus. I found pretty much everything I was looking for… Good show
Mooqee (@mooqee)
“A great sample pack with some very tasty samples! Will be getting some use out of these. Fantastic!”
Atomic Hooligan (@terryhooligan)
These is a great pack for everyone from starter to pro. Grabbing a loop out of this pack to get a grove going is a great use of this resource. I will be doing exactly that. The single hits are great too for layering your normal drums. Good work guys.
Beatslappaz (@beatslappaz)
Full support from Juxtapose and Beatslappaz. One of the best breaks sample packs we have ever come across, with the percussion loops being a particular highlight. We don’t know who was behind putting this pack together, but I want to buy them a beer for doing such a great job on this one. If you write booty breaks, this pack is a must buy.

A great selection of tools for the modern breaks producer

A.Skillz Mixtape – Ultimate B-Boy Funk Breaks (2002)

Just dug out this dj mix from 2002, when I was a wee nipper
I made it with my good friend Ed funk for his B-boy crew’s training sessions (s/o Floor Crusaders!). There’s probably been less than 5 copies in existence UNTIL NOW!
Warning- this is proper original filthy funk breaks created specifically for b-boys. -A.Skillz
