Mixing the old with the new Denmark’s Wiccatron drops a set of breakbeat and big beat celebrating past bangers and promoting the up and coming artists of now. From Underworld to Plump DJs to Groove Mind this mix is a nice blend which was aired on NSB Radio a few days ago. For over a decade now, Bazza Ranks has been releasing Reggae inspired bass music with his partner in crime Jay Sharpe as the, Dirty Dubsters and also releasing music of the same ilk on their label, Irish Moss Records. Taking a wee break from that though, Bazza has recently dropped a free tune of his own which comes in the form of a 90’s Garage remix of Bluntskull’s ‘Keep Doin It’ ft. Screechy Dan. The Reggae influence is strong in this one thanks to the vocal from original and this crisp roller also comes with a beaut of a bassline! Rib tickling stuff for those who like it that way.

Because I’ve been hitting a few festivals over the last couple of months and because of the recovery from them, I’ve gotten miles behind with blogging. One of the tunes I’ve been meaning to send your way is Mafia Kiss’ latest free tune ‘Your Body’ which uses a sample that most will recognise from Tom Novy‘s 2004 hit of the same name. This slab of broken beat action is accompanied by an insane amount of bass and it has been road tested plenty of times with party-goers going nuts when the beast drops.

Because it to me so long to get ‘Your Body’ posted, Mafia Kiss has another 3 new bass weapons that you can now add to your arsenal. His own tunes ‘Think’ and ‘Raise’ and his remix of ‘Go Shake It’ by, Aggresivnes, can be found below but be prepared, these tunes pack a hefty punch! Let those bass cannons have it!

If you’re a festival lover and you’ve been to Secret Garden Party, Boomtown, Shambhala, Love Saves The Day or Snowbombing, there’s a very good chance you will have come across ‘The Dance-Off’ stage. For those that have never been to any of those festivals, the crew who go by the name of, The Dance-Off Soundsystem, build an installation that is a feast for both the ears and eyes and lay on a 3 day party that you’re unlikely to forget ever!

‘The Dance-Off’ stage is centred around a boxing ring where anyone can step up and go toe to toe with a dance floor foe. Sometimes these dance-off’s are amazing and sometimes it’s total car crash but that’s what adds to the fun of it all. It’s not all about the general public throwing their best shapes though as the boxing ring also hosts expert turntablists and professional Bboys and Bgirls who show everyone how it’s really done! The backdrop to the boxing ring features in it’s heart a DJ booth and to the left and right of that, well, that can be whatever is in the minds of the super creative folk who make up the Dance Off Soundsystem.

I was in attendance at this years Secret Garden Party and I did go to party at ‘The Dance-Off’ stage and I’ve gotta tell you, they sure know how to put on a show! It was a poignant gig for the crew this time around as it all started for them at SGP 10 years ago and it worked out that they would be celebrating their 10th birthday at the last ever SGP festival, which I’m pretty sure is why my mind was blown by the spectacle they put on.

To celebrate their 10th birthday further, The Dance-Off Soundsystem have released 2 free mixes which give a perfect indication of what you should expect if you decide to party with them. The first of these is a lush Funk/Soul/Disco mix that’s full of cool flavours. The second mix is far more lively and features a selection of Breakbeat, Bass, Garage, D n B and Jungle tracks. So that’s one mix to get your house party rockin’, and one to kickback to once you’ve expended all that energy, top stuff!

‘It’s A Bass Ting’ is the first in series of mixes that UK based, Kurse, will be dropping on a monthly basis. He’s kept things on the down-lo music wise for a while after the arrival of a little one, but he’s now found himself in a position where it’s time to get back to it and what a return he’s making with his new Bass heavy offering. The selection of weapons he’s chosen for his new mix are absolute beasts and I guess it goes without saying that to enjoy this mix in all it’s glory, you really should get those sound-systems cranked!

As well as releasing amazing music and packing out festival stages this summer, The Allergies have started up their very own podcast. This is amazing news for all of us Funk lovers out there because these guys definitely know their stuff and handpick only the finest cuts of Funk for their one hour podcasts. As well dropping brand spanking new tunes, they also throw in a handful of classics, a few tunes of their own which includes tracks from their latest album ‘Push On’ and invite guests in for a guestmix and occasional interview. Andy Cooper and Chrome were the first two guests on the first two episodes and dropping in for episode three with a cracking guestmix is the incredibly talented, Daytoner.

We’re pretty sure episode 4 will be a long fairly soon so keep em peeled!

If it’s low slung and deep, or shiny and floor filling Disco music your after, then look no further than the talents of Italian producer, Massimo Vanoni a.k.a Massimo – The Smoker. Massimo is a recent discovery for us here on the ward and we’re so very happy we’ve discovered him and the massive amount of music he’s released. A lot of his music has been listened to and even though there’s plenty more to get stuck into, what has been checked out is absolute gold! It has been super tricky to pick a tune of his to post, but the groove he’s added to his edit of Stretch’s 1975 jam ‘Why Did You Do It’ meant that it’s the one that just had to be shared. Once you’ve sampled that groove, digging for more treasure is what you need to do next.

The Captain is widely regarded as one of the top Funky Breaks/Ghetto Funk producers out there. His sound is well polished and has been born from his love of the golden decades of classic R&B, Soul, Latin, Hip-Hop and Rock-n-Roll and those old skool flavours then get accompanied by modern day production techniques. The Captain has received full support from artists like Krafty Kuts, Daddy G (Massive Attack), Freddy Fresh, Fort Knox Five, Skeewiff and Featurecast, so you’re know you’re doing it right when names like that big-up your work.

The Captain has been on the ward before but has only featured on compilation albums and in other DJ’s mixes.
