You can never be quite sure what to expect from Technique's Ukrainian assassin. After all, MaxNRG has repeatedly proven that he's perfectly prepared to twist up a sub-genre or two in his quest for dancefloor mastery. We've seen him experiment with multiple shades of the drum and bass palette and funnel all of them through his highly individual approach to musicality.

The only constant is the presence of rock-hard drums and lethal bass.

Even in his craziest excursions, it's all about the rave.

In “Kill the Snake”, Max casts his mad scientist's eye onto a blending of styles. There's that high-energy big-room vibe somehow entwined with a more claustrophobic technoid, neuro flavour. This counterpoint is established right from the intro, as low, menacing strings are offset by a modulating ravey synth in the high end. These sounds lay the foundation for a documentary dialogue sample that gives the track it's title. Then clean pizzicato strikes mesh with an alarm-call riser to take this sound-melding tune to the drop.

The bass and beats are, as you'd expect from MaxNRG, clinically merciless. Ear-poppingly pressurised drums ride along a driving undercurrent of grittiness in the bass. The mids and highs fulfil that smooth-and-serrated combination that was laid out in the intro and take us effortlessly through building layers of drama. The energy just doesn't quit.

It's clear by now that MaxNRG is a big fan of taking established ideas and reconfiguring them almost beyond recognition. Whether it's from instinct or meticulous study, his understanding of the form shines through, without ever distracting from the drum and bass heartbeat at the core of his music. This is intelligent rave music that hits hard.

Backbeat was a monthly event here in Perth, Western Australia a place for Breaks and the promotion of it to like minded people in the club scene. Thanks to one person DJ Gully (RIP) the Breaks scene excelled back in the mid 2000’s and one of the acts to brace it’s presence was the Beatslappaz. While at that time it was all about the Nuskool/Tearout Breaks the Beatslappaz continued to grow and eventually lead them onto the path of winning a Stanton Warriors remix competition and gaining acknowledgement among their peers leading them to their own EP release on the Punks Music label. This is a rare mix from them, i hope you enjoy !

Lanx and Nick Slater, aka the Drumattic Twins, have been a leading force in dance music since they first began touring over 20 years ago. Making their name as Shades of Rhythm, they ruled the early nineties rave scene with legendary anthems ‘Sweet Sensation’, ‘Sound of Eden’, ‘Extacy’ and ‘Homicide’ and performed with the likes of The Prodigy and N-Joi.

Since rebranding themselves as the Drumattic Twins in 1997, Nick and Lanx quickly replicated this global notoriety thanks to massive hit tracks ‘Feelin Kinda Strange’ ‘Twister’ and ‘HyperSpeed’. They teamed up with the legendary release platform Finger Lickin Records in 1999 and settled quickly into the close-knit world of the breakbeat scene, working alongside global acts such as Plump DJs, Soul of Man and Lee Coombs.

From a string of releases from 1999 starting with top the selling “Feeling Kinda Strange” till late 2013 with their “Get Up and Dance EP” on Sugarbeat Records and 2 full length albums in between the Drumattic Twins have laid down a variety of music that have influenced the Breaks Scene and shaped it in to what it is today.

Yet another mix from yesteryear this time from the Guru of Breaks, Krafty Kuts. One of the most influential people in the electronic music scene today with experience as a DJ / Producer for more than a decade. From humble beginnings, Krafty Kuts is now one of the big players on the world’s club scene. An enviable career which boasts accolades ranging from eight times Breakspoll Winner, Best International DJ and Best Single of the Year by DJ Mag, and DJing alongside The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim and even the Rolling Stones.

Krafty is still making waves in the dance music scene after more than a decade with his new label ‘Instant Vibes,’ which gives him full creative control over the music. With Krafty in the driving seat, he continues his love affair with breaks by bringing through new talent from the likes of  Marten Hoerger, Calvertron, Jay Robinson.
