Keith MacKenzie & DJ Fixx – The Armory Podcast 165
The unique stylings of Keith MacKenzie & DJ Fixx are well flexed in this their 3rd mix for the Armory Podcast, Breaks, Bass and Trap music are highlighted in this mix.
Keith MacKenzie has emerged as one of the driving forces behind the global breakbeat scene, regularly gigging across the US and Europe. Now based in Chicago, Keith spent his formative years in the now legendary Florida rave scene racking up early credits on influential labels like DJ Icey’s Zone Records and After Dark before launching his own label. Illeven:Eleven Recordings, now in its 11th year of operations, built a reputation for releasing quality collaborations from a diverse roster of artists (Audiostalkers, Deekline & Ed Solo, Fixx, Infiniti, Bass Kleph, Gigi Barocco, Rico Tubbs, Sporty-O, Sue Cho and Whiskey Pete have all released on the label) making it a Beatport mainstay in the process. Under the informal moniker of KMFX alongside Fixx he’s gone on to release internationally on labels like Deekline’s Rat Records, as well as Punks, the venerable UK imprint formed by breakbeat stalwarts Stanton Warriors.
In 2012 Keith teamed up with long time creative collaborators Fixx and D:RC to form Smookie Illson, a new bass music alias for studio experiments that fall outside the rather strict umbrella of breakbeat music. After trying their hand at everything from electro house to moombahton (signing their first demos to Potty Mouth Music in the process) they found their footing in the EDM “trap” scene, churning out bootlegs and originals at a brisk pace and gaining steady support from fans and peers alike. Their 2013 bootleg remix of Yo Majesty’s ‘Club Action’ turned into one of the longest-running festival season selections, gaining support year after year from scene favorites like Skrillex & Diplo, Baauer, RL Grime, Brillz, and Loudpvck. 2015 saw Smookie Illson releasing their ‘Compound Riddims EP’ a highly-rated collab with the UK’s Ragga Twins on Play Me Records, as well as releases on Seattle’s Simplify Records and Australia’s Safari Music.
Over the past 15 years, breakbeat pioneer DJ Fixx has been stocking the shelves of record stores everywhere. Said by many as one of the most innovative and consistent producers in the industry, he continues to deliver some of the most sought after breakbeat tracks available. Making his debut in 1998, Fixx produced over 75 anthems on the classic Kaleidoscope Music label. Many of these timeless tracks are still played frequently today. This was then followed by Fixx’s own personal imprint, Bottom-End Records (2004-2008). Managed by Afterdark, the BER trademark produced some of the biggest anthems in the industry, easily claiming the spot of one of the top five best-selling domestic labels in the country. Alongside of Keith MacKenzie, Fixx is currently a leading producer for Keith’s illeven:eleven label. Frequent solo installments can be found on ILL, as well as collaborations with Keith under the production duo ‘KMFX’. With over 150 12-inch releases, over 300 exclusive digital releases, and twelve massively-distributed CDs under his belt, Fixx has assembled one impressive Discography. All of this resulting in one of the strongest and most loyal followings in the industry.

Parallax Echo Corps – Second Sun EP
For the last 6 years Death Proof Recordings have been releasing an amazingly eclectic range of music at the techno end of the spectrum. Omega Men were remixers and producers who had done their magic on many tunes for Death Proof, Lot49, Diablo Loco and others and have now morphed into Parallax Echo Corps. They are label owner Paul Blandford and Dominic Mayer - another on Death Proof’s roster who has even remixed Swedish indie band Acid House Kings’ “This Heart is a Stone”. A previous remix under this name of Brisker and Magitman’s Remote was the only other taste of this duo – which was a straight out techno stomper with some experimental bleeps and acid squelches for good measure. This was just a taster for this 3 track release though which takes the bleeps and experimental elements further and I hope for more releases to come.
First track: Second Sun. Even on first listen I knew this would be a grower. There is so much going on in this track that builds and subsides for all of its 7 and a half minutes but never bores. The simple central coda starts right at the beginning and would be tedious is there wasn’t so much going on over the top of it. Electronic sounds and small refrains are constantly appearing and disappearing as the tune builds and builds until every 2 minutes when you think it can’t build anymore it crescendos and you come back down to a steady beat and it starts building and overlaying again. Even when it came to an end I wanted more and I hope you’ll feel the same.
Track 2: Under Fire. A more banging techno track reminiscent of Detroit techno but with the distorted kick drums and the even more distorted synths it will be placed firmly in the modern techno bin. One for monged out early mornings when you just need a beat and that beat must be hard (not sure what kind of night that night was though).
Track 3: Elbow Room. Another unrelenting banging techno tune that reminds me of distorted 90s German techno but slower…I think.
Buy this if only for Second Sun which might just blow you away….it did me.

Tom Clyde and One Way – Black Lodge
There is some good techno/techfunk/breaks (whatever you want to call it) coming out of Russia with Yreane and Tom Clyde leading the charge. Released on Census Sound Recordings, in my opinion one of the best labels around, producing techy tracks and in fact a whole variety of music from dubby tech to progressive, the label has being going from strength to strength recently with a strong roster of artists who are releasing top quality tunes like this. On this track (part of a two track release) Tom Clyde is joined by his fellow Russian OneWay (AKA Ivan Merkulov) to produce this rolling tech funk monster. The track builds from a very funky rhythm reminiscent of Meat Katie to break with a dirty heavy bass line that brings to mind Hedflux all the while there’s a very squelchy synth keeping the interest along with various distorted vocals. This is very much one for a good dark late night club and when that second break kicks in the dancefloor will go wild (this is offered purely as read and no guarantee of ensuing mayhem is implied – but you’ll certainly find me doing just that).

L Plus – Hideout LP [Technique Recordings]
Pre-Order: https://Technique.lnk.to/Hideout1d
L Plus’ hotly anticipated ‘Hideout LP’ lands on Technique Recordings 10/03/17
When your album features collabs with John B, Muffler, Drumsound & Bassline Smith and MC Coppa, that in itself is an endorsement that carries considerable weight.
And when your LP is loaded with killers like the uplifting title track, the duelling lasers of ‘Battleground’, the insane dance dynamics of ‘Avenger’, atmospheric synthwave influenced John B collab ‘Original 80s’ and grittier than grit itself banger ‘Final Chapter’ among the 15 deadly weapons then in reality, no endorsement is needed nor is it lofty enough. Your DnB dosage for the day, week, month, year and millennium is right here!!!
