What ever happened to General Midi ?

General Midi, or Paul Crossman, who also performed under the name Fluid, came out of the Bristol club scene, making a splash when he became resident DJ at the Shimmy Club in  1994. His mix of breakbeat with nu-skool, electronica, house, and hip-hop made him a popular act.

Emerging from the backrooms of the Bristol Club scene his slick DJ ability and an ear for a great tune gave him regular appearances at breaks hotspots across the planet such as Fabric, Chew The Fat, Blow Pop, Sounds On Sundays (Sydney), Two Tribes (Australia), Zouk (Singapore), Budapest, all across the USA, Hungary, Spain, Serbia, China and Hong Kong.

General Midi’s singles have been released on some of the most respected breaks labels of the time, including TCR (Rennie Pilgrims label) & Kilowatt (Hyper’s label). In 1999 he released his single “The Westerner,” followed two years later by “Daft Funk,” the same year that his first full-length release, Genetically Modified. All of this has led to his debut artist album ‘Midi Style’ which was released on Distinct’ive Records in 2005. In 2009 he released his follow up album ‘Operation Overdrive’.

Paul Crossman also worked with writing partner and audio engineer Al Watson in the duo act called “Starecase”.

Currently Paul Crossman works as a freelance course developer & music technology tutor at Point Blank London.

Underground music specialists FUNKYSTEPZ join the Four40 Records family with a knockout 4-track EP, infusing UKG, UK funky, house, and of course bass. The Kings Cross EP draws on a range of underground music influences, condensed into the realm of house music that’s equally melodic and heavy. You can preview below but you can save the trouble and get the 320s from Juno right now. Seriously, this entire EP is a 10/10.

The title track combines a choir chorus and bubbling basslines with subtley funky shuffle.

“Bump X” conjures some 90s nostalgia with its key stabs and 4/4 kicks. This is a track that’ll get the ladies’ hips moving while simultaneously cause a ruckus with the lads.

“Boyz In Da Hood” is an all out jackin’ number, styled with a little g-house flair and the perfect amount of grime for those times when the dancefloor craves something a little dirty.

“Twister” is all about surprises. The tune starts with a garage shuffle but immediately drops into something more sinister. Just as fast, the track changes back. These switches are executed perfectly – even though they’re abrupt, the track flows like vodka at a hen party.

Erase Records have been holding down the deep house vibes for a little longer than a hot minute. The label and artists on it have a wondrous ability to draw on classic samples and work their production magic into pure dance floor joy. The latest from the label’s founder, WASABI is more of the same. Co-produced with HAWAIIAN BOY, the track takes Modjo’s “Lady” (which samples Chic) for a dive in the deep end of the pool. Summer’s here, let’s go for a swim.

Here’s something really special from our friends at Memetic. They’re hosting an all-day, outdoor party at one of the most historic sights in Winnipeg. t’s another first for the Memetic crew, a free electronic music event with a special multimedia visual performance once the sun sets. Suspended over the Assiniboine River at the Forks, the former rail bridge is one of the most unusual places to party and I’m sure there has never been a concert on it.

The event features the return of MICH EP, and a headlining set from a crowd favourite at last year’s Manitoba Electronic Music Exhibition, MAX ULIS. A number of our favourite local jocks are playing too, including Shael, Nathan Zahn, Mike Jasper, Rick Logic, Lotek, Berbs, and Kasm.

Saturday, July 5
