Recently signed to Breakout Recordings is Peterborough based Drum n Bass producer and dj, Instant. Starting out mixing at a young age he soon went on to music production. His style, deep, techy Drum n Bass with a hint of old skool Jungle thrown in for good measure whilst creating the most earth breaking bassline’s he can conjure. He is also the founder of Strictly Soulful and co-founder of Hijack which are two of Peterborough’s biggest and long running Drum n Bass nights.

From Instant’s most recent release Funk It Up you get all that is mentioned above. Techy beats, deep basslines with smooth yet glitchy stabs, creating a unique sound to pack any sparse dancefloor!

The free download comes out ahead of a brand new 4 track ep which is out late September. This dude is one to watch for all you D n B fans. Big things are coming your way!

Well it’s that wonderful time of year again and the festivals are coming thick and fast. Top of the pile in the swing world goes to the mighty Boomtown which has an absolutely cracking swing lineup once again. If you haven’t been before, get in there quick because you truly won’t regret it. Instead of paying over the top for over-rated pop stars and indie bands, Boomtowns policy is all about strength in depth. They have one of the biggest lineups of bands and DJ’s you’ve ever seen and the sheer effort they put into the setup of the site and their production values simply has to be seen to be believed. Come down, check it out, and if you find these blog posts useful come tell me after I play in the Ballroom!

It’s been sad to hear that Dutty Moonshine have lost one of their founding members with Alex Furley moving on to other projects. You’ll be sadly missed sir and good luck for the future. (Do realise though that if you quit now you’ll never to be able to snog our best friend again like happened last year at Swingamapig. Apparently he said that doesn’t normally happen to him but I don’t believe a word of it… )

Finally Bertie Dastard happened to mention that if I advertise this Roundup as always coming out on the 1st of the month, I should deliver. Well, this one just about squeezes in but I’ve still got a few more tracks to include so I might do an update in a day or so!

Free Music The Jenova Collective seem to be going well at the moment with a great looking live show and a regular stream of releases. They’ve chipped in here with a nice little remix of Caravan Palace.

New Releases DJ Dunya – Xyloswing EP DJ Dunya has turned up a few times on this blog and it’s great to see that he’s now got his debut EP on non other than Freshly Squeezed Records. This EP is slick quality swing which is designed for the dancefloor.

Le Mozeltov Tov (Green Queen Music) Dr Cat and Francis Red have come through with a nice 2 track EP on the ever consistent Green Queen. Dr Cat turns it into a stomping balkan march while Francis Red adds a bit more bottom end mischief ideal for a later night slot. Available exclusively from Beatport.

Infiniti aka Juan Atkins & Orlando Voorn – Game One [Tresor]
Juan Atkins & Orlando Voorn team up to give us this scorcher under the “Infiniti” alter ego for Tresor. It was a tough cal for me between the fantastic original, and the brooding Rennie Foster remix – both classic tunes re-released digitally in 2013.

Ray Kajioka – Strike [Kanzleramt]
I really love the space in this track, it feels like it fills many parts of your mind, and sounds killer on a big system. Sweet, dark and sexy techno.

Eddie Amador & Alex Costa – New Sound [KMS]
Alex Costa is an artist I’ve respected for awhile, so I was thrilled to see this promo come through my mailbox. A relentless detroit “new world sound from the underground” it just screams 4am warehouse business.

 Petter B – Imitate [H-Productions]
There is such forward propulsion in this tune, from the high hats, to the movement of the melodic line. Such energy!

Anyone with a decent record collection from the early 90s will treasure a fair few releases from the producers on this line up. The likes of 4Hero, Foul Play, 2 Bad Mice and Nookie don’t really need any hype to those familiar with the beginnings of drum n’ bass and jungle. Each of them can boast an incredibly impressive back catalogue of influential and often game-changing tracks that were played and played again by the likes of Fabio, Grooverider, Randall, Doc Scott, Jumpin’ Jack Frost, Ray Keith, and all of the original DJs who led the scene back in the day. Still to this day, those of us who were there will tell you that the vibe of that era can’t be beaten… and that’s a fact largely due to the innovation of these producers. Often working on studio set-ups that would confound and totally frustrate a modern producer, the sheer number of hours they put into completing each track made the whole effort a labour of love, which is very evident in the tunes themselves. The mastery and precision of these guys’ breakbeat manipulation remains, in many ways, unsurpassed to this day.

This is a bit of a special line-up. And it’s truly a very rare chance to hear these guys together on the same bill. Don’t miss it.

Our resident old skool/hardcore nutter Tariq, caught up with Si from 2 Bad Mice to delve a little deeper…

How did you guys get into raving and the scene in general?

I basically got into it through Sean – I was a Hip Hop kid and he introduced me to a whole different sound….

And when did you start producing?

It was 91-92

Who were your early influences when it came to production?

Joey Beltram, Break the Limits, Frank de Wulf, Shut Up and Dance, Blapps Posse to name a few…

Tell us a bit about the iconic ‘Bombscare’ track, how did it come together?

Bombscare is Seans baby and it was masterminded by him. If you break it down to the raw components though – it is a very simple and effective track….Try doing it. I think that there is about 10 samples in it if that.

How did you meet Rob Playford and what led to you getting signed to Moving Shadow?

Rob lived in the same village as me and we knew his girlfriend. We hassled her to hassle Rob to let us in the studio and the rest is history.

Of all the events you have played at down the years doing P.As and DJ sets, is there a favourite moment and can you tell us a bit about it?

Too many to mention but playing Glasto 2013 is my moment. Loved it. Recently Sean and Paul did Dourfest and that was pretty amazing.

We’d love to hear your take on the debate about what the greatest year of the rave scene was?

For us 1992.

Moving forward to the present, what do you think of the ‘NuSkool’ scene I.e 140/Future Jungle, Hardcore/Rave Breaks etc. Any artists and labels you rate in the present era?

I follow it and love it. So many decent producers out there like Radiokillaz, Pressa, Breakz, Vinyl Junkie and the Sub Slayers mob…

Can you tell us 3 tunes that are currently a mainstay of your sets?

Wow!! Difficult one. Rocking down the House remix, Johnny Osborne – In your Eyes and anything by Radiokillaz!!

Now, you’re going to be DJ’ing at ‘Stepback Sessions’ @Jamm, Brixton on the 1st August, along with a whole load of old skool legends, that’s going to be a pretty special night, what can we expect from 2 Bad Mice on the night?

Mainly heavy drinking from one member – the other is the designated driver and the more sensible one (me)

So many – everyone knows they mean the world to me and have contributed so much to the 2BM tale. Special mention to Randall who was such a massive influence and friend to me back in the day. So glad he has asked us to play…..

2 Bad Mice Interview + Competition

Keeping in the spirit of the Throwback Thursday theme I’ve dug out an all time favourite of mine and many others too. It’s Pyramid’s mighty, mighty 140 Breaks re-fix of Emelie Sande’s – Heaven. I’ve been luck enough to experience the down right dancefloor destruction this track brings a few times now, namely this years Breakspoll awards where Pyramid dropped it around 5:30am and once again sent the crowd nuts!

If you’ve never heard this track before then just wait for the drop, it’s incredible! This will be one of those tracks that will live on and on and on!

The Push are a four piece band from London. They skilfully blend Breaks, Drum n Bass and Dubstep in their own unique style in a one off live experience. These guys are definitely one to keep an eye out for in the future and are bound to be hot property very soon!

In this remix posted The Push have remixed Freestylers – The Coming Storm. The remix takes on a more classic reggae kind of vibe but still serves up a whole heap of bounce and bass. They have kindly put it up for free download so you know what to do…
