After his debut album, Know No Boundaries, dropped earlier this year, Ill Audio has been hard at work back in the studio constructing his next batch of bass heavy badness.  The Devolution EP is a wicked dubstep four tracker which showcases Ill Audio’s diverse ear for deeply cinematic, heartfelt anthems that are hypnotic, dark and sonically devastating! This one is coming out on the huge stateside label, Heavy Artillery label run by Faust & Shortee. Preview below.

Released 23rd September on all good digital outlets including Juno.

To celebrate the release I caught up with him to find out a little more. He also offered us his wicked future jungle remix of Laid Blak’s – Red, which was released on Ruff n Fresh Records last year, as an exclusive free download. Read through to the end of the interview for the track.

1. Thanks for taking the time to answer our questions, for those that don’t know, who are you, what do you do and what style(s) of music do you play?

I produce all tempos of Bass music as iLL AUDiO. I work with vocalists a lot and have played guitar for a long time so theres a lot of live elements going in the mix. Theres a big Rock & Dub influence in the sound.

2. Tell us a bit about what you’re working on now, any releases on the horizon?

I released my debut album a few months ago on Distinctive Records. I was holed up in studios a long time on that, and was really lucky to get to work with some of my favorite artists – Skin, Akala, Roots Manuva, to name a few, plus a full orchestra on some of the tracks. Next up I have an E.P titled ‘Devolution’ dropping on Heavy Artillery next week. The title track is about how mass media and big pharma subjugate the masses through covert means. Pre sales are hinting that it might chart as the feel good hit of the summer.

3. What other artists have you been feeling recently, who are you currently championing in your DJ sets?

Rido, Joe Ford, Memtrix right now. Really pushing the production levels, and not afraid to experiment

4. Which Club Nights do you play at regularly?

Right now im concentrating on writing music and upping my production skills. Theres loads of new material im getting ready to release over the next few months so Djing will be more for next year I reckon.

5. Worst request whilst DJing?

I got booked to play a wedding once. Everything I was getting asked to play I didn’t have, Abba was probably top of the list.

6. What are your best/worst DJ experiences?

Best so far was doing a mobile float at Nottinghill Carnival a few years ago with my mates. Everything from rigging the lorry to driving through the streets of London with a 30k system was unreal.

7. What got you into electronic music? What made you choose your current style and sound?

I got taken to some raves and big parties when I was just a kid so I got the taste for it then. I played in a lot of bands as a teenager but always wanted to do something that sounded totally different. Electronic music has always been on the front line of new sound but back then it seemed too technical and complicated to get involved in. I guess the turning point was when I broke a load of bones in an accident and couldnt play guitar. I had a crack of logic and got really into that and it all started to make more sense, and as the studio has gone more in the box over the years its been easier to get a big sound with not much gear. Im still trying to balence the live / electronic elements cause they like to fight.

8. What do you get up to outside of music?

Sometimes I eat, sleep. I have a girlfriend. I gave up drink, meat and substances over a year ago now, so my high in life comes from music, training hard and eating well. Rock and roll. I’m also learning about real science, alternative energy’s, ways to be self sustainable.

9. What do you think it means to be a “successful” DJ or producer?

To me success means doing what you love and making a living from it with the least amount of comprimise. Also the ultimate thing for me is making timeless music – if you manage to make a track that stands the test of time – thats the true test of music in my eyes.
10. What can we expect from you over the remainder of 2013 and beyond?

More music! I want up the production levels with each release. I have another album on the go. A load of EPs to drop before that. Plus I’m looking at getting a full live show together for next year and have some wicked collabs lined up that I can’t talk about yet.
