Electro Swing Roundup – August 2014
Well it’s that wonderful time of year again and the festivals are coming thick and fast. Top of the pile in the swing world goes to the mighty Boomtown which has an absolutely cracking swing lineup once again. If you haven’t been before, get in there quick because you truly won’t regret it. Instead of paying over the top for over-rated pop stars and indie bands, Boomtowns policy is all about strength in depth. They have one of the biggest lineups of bands and DJ’s you’ve ever seen and the sheer effort they put into the setup of the site and their production values simply has to be seen to be believed. Come down, check it out, and if you find these blog posts useful come tell me after I play in the Ballroom!
It’s been sad to hear that Dutty Moonshine have lost one of their founding members with Alex Furley moving on to other projects. You’ll be sadly missed sir and good luck for the future. (Do realise though that if you quit now you’ll never to be able to snog our best friend again like happened last year at Swingamapig. Apparently he said that doesn’t normally happen to him but I don’t believe a word of it… )
Finally Bertie Dastard happened to mention that if I advertise this Roundup as always coming out on the 1st of the month, I should deliver. Well, this one just about squeezes in but I’ve still got a few more tracks to include so I might do an update in a day or so!
Free Music The Jenova Collective seem to be going well at the moment with a great looking live show and a regular stream of releases. They’ve chipped in here with a nice little remix of Caravan Palace.
Like this. Grant Lazlo with a deep electro blues groover:
Great little balkan groover here from Savages & Suefo:
Another month, another remix of I Heard It Through The Grapevine? Yep although do quite like this.
Kiwistar seems to be heavier. I reckon this is a new genre – Horn n Bass?
This is back on gentler ground. Sophisticated swing and beautiful singing from Elle, The Bells & The Trick:

Here’s DJ Curb with a nice little soulful track:
Mashing together various swing classics here:
Answers on a postcard please for how to describe this one Swingbot…
Brightons Basschimp has mashed up Eminem with possibly the most seminal track in electro swing:
New Releases DJ Dunya – Xyloswing EP DJ Dunya has turned up a few times on this blog and it’s great to see that he’s now got his debut EP on non other than Freshly Squeezed Records. This EP is slick quality swing which is designed for the dancefloor.
Le Mozeltov Tov (Green Queen Music) Dr Cat and Francis Red have come through with a nice 2 track EP on the ever consistent Green Queen. Dr Cat turns it into a stomping balkan march while Francis Red adds a bit more bottom end mischief ideal for a later night slot. Available exclusively from Beatport.
Here’s the Dr Cat mix:
And the Francis Red:
Morlack – Wonderful Day (F-Block Remix) Drum & bass tracks featuring vintage samples are always quite hard to come by so don’t miss this F-Block remix off the recent Morlack album. If you like the Louis Armstrong vocals there’s an original version too. Available from Juno.
DJ Mixes Menage Quad have stepped up with a DJ mix this month:
Really like this chilled out mix from BillionDan. Quality downtempo swing action:
Swings & Roundabout’s Vol.2 Parov Stelar & Friends (Chillout). Mixed By BillionDan by Dan $Mith (Billiondan) on Mixcloud
That’s it. See you in a month! If you’ve got anything you’d like included in future roundups hit me up on soundcloud.

AK Sediki – Buddah Pest EP [FREE DOWNLOAD]
AK SEDIKI – BUDDAH PEST EP
Three original tracks produced by only Budapest based producers, some of the beasts of the East (Coarse, Laser Tasilo and One Hand Clap) from the heart of Europe hittin’ you with heavy glitch hop broken rhythms and filthy bass combined with the most random ill rhymes and twisted lyrics from the also Budapest based MC (AK Sediki) providing you a chance to get a sneak peek into that side of this vibrant freaky city you’ve never seen before.
Buddah Pest EP is a fat greasy slice of this city’s underground vibes with a cheap beer soaked / sweet ganja smoke aftertaste

B-Roll’s Bassbins #2
Morning breakers! Couple of belting releases for you this week, and in a new addition to this column – I flick back through my breaks vinyl to highlight a tune from what I consider to be the golden age of breaks. Not to take anything away from the releases these days, but I seem to hear a lot of older mixes cropping up again online, and the tunes still do the business. Nothing wrong with looking back and reflecting how we got to where we are today!
Gotta be careful about not putting too much Finger Lickin records stuff in here, but it’s hard. Looking at my collection, I have loads and loads of their records, white labels too. Part of what makes these records so awesome for me is the great artwork by Jem Panufnik. Serious talent. If I had my way, my flat would have every one of his covers framed up on the walls. Not sure what Mrs. B-Roll would think about that! Both tracks are absolute corkers, Foxy Moron is a serious acid-tinged banger, but you they both still hold up real well.
Buy it here.
While we are on the subject of Jem Panufnik, here is his tasty release on his musical alter-ego – Jem Stone. With remixes by Featurecast and some tasty lyrical flows, you need this in your box. Digital exclusive, available from Juno here.
Morlack – Loose Booty
French funk blaster Morlack brings a 14-track album of Nu/Ghetto/Glitch and swing style funk. Nice mix of styles and vocals, an album you could actually listen to, not just for the dancefloors!
Janette Slack & Some DJ Feat. Tuhin Chisti – Kut Me Sum
Renowned breaks DJ Janette Slack recently upped sticks and shifted to the other side of the world. London’s loss is Hong Kong’s gain though, and here we have her first EP release from that side of the pond. Solid package here. Original track is a nice rising breaker, but there are some super remixes too. Funkanomics turn in a trap-esque re-work, while B-Side brings it to the Ghetto Funk side of things. The Chamber version though, is the one that sent shivers down my spine. Deep rolling bassline, total winner.
Lots to like here, can’t wait for the next release! Buy now from Juno.

Stealth – Homage

Homage
On Program Records
“Homage “ is Dark Roller that will keep the tech heads happy
Feel the Bass when this Missile DRops !!!!
Good Vibes
Out 28/07/14 - http://tinyurl.com/nzb6r7e
Worldwide Release: 28th July
Staying true to his name, Stealth has craftily taken centre stage. Every record he’s released oozing with sophistication has repeatedly stolen the spotlight. And this next one is no exception.
The production connoisseur yet again goes for the aural jugular, using ProgRAM as a launch pad. Stealth demonstrates the imprint’s forward thinking movements and command of a genre which often goes unmatched. The relationship has been harmonious; alongside ProgRAM, he’s already made a crater sized impact within the dnb community… And it’s not difficult to see why.
‘Homage’ leads in a tightly fashioned intensity. Dark, brooding and with plucky percussion, it’s a tribute to the sound Dillinja mastered. An instantly recognisable vocal sample is filtered through the record’s menace, meandering perfectly between the bassline’s thumps which eventually drop us into LFO-lead chaos. Piece by piece the main melody begins to build, throbbing until it completely over-takes the record’s more humanistic elements. Audibly stocky, yet with a dimension that rings true of Stealth’s icy production, it’s a relentless roller with a nasty bite.
Next up, ‘Smash It’ still holds onto the merciless setting of its predecessor, but also offers something completely different. With a bristling rhythm that steps its way into a haunting crescendo, Stealth uses this break to highlight the track’s imposing detail; it trickles, floods and then the dam breaks due to the build up’s audible weight. Progressing deeper into the mix, the track is underpinned by quaking sub bass. An insistent kick and snap of drums merges against steeply elevating note loops, laying out Stealth’s finely combed conundrum of complex yet hard hitting composition. Both ‘Homage’ and ‘Smash It’ receive the innovative-stamp of approval, playing on more contemporary elements but also delving deep into the 90s, promising both tracks remain timeless.
Stealth is pushing his influence into every corner, with his late night vibes commanding even the hardest of crowds. So, yet again, it’s time to get with the ProgRAM, and succumb to one of the scene’s biggest contenders.
