Anyone who was a D&B fan at the turn of the millennium will remember the impact that “liquid funk” had on the genre. A rebellion against the techno-fuelled aggression that had dominated the scene for several years, liquid funk was spearheaded by then Radio 1 DJ Fabio and led to the rise of some of drum & bass’ most respected artists and labels, from the mighty Calibre to the unstoppable Hospital Records.

Now, a decade and a half on, you might be forgiven for thinking that liquid funk’s moment has passed. One listen to the playlists of Radio 1’s elite will tell you otherwise, though. While the name might no longer be on everyone’s lips the echoes of its sound still resonate today. You can hear them in the UK #1 singles from Sigma, you can sense the euphoric overtones and rib-rattling basslines at feel-good drum & bass nights across the globe and over half a million subscribers worldwide follow the sound on Liquicity’s own YouTube channel.

Since its inception the Liquicity brand has become a behemoth, selling out events across Europe and connecting their YouTube community in online and offline situations. Meanwhile their compilations go from strength to strength - two of their previous albums have hit the #1 spot both in the iTunes Electronic chart and the Beatport Top 100 Releases chart.

‘Escapism 2’ is the second instalment in Liquicity’s compilation series which invites you to soak up the glorious sound of liquid funk circa 2014. The first edition received an incredible amount of love topping both the Beatport Top 100 Releases and the iTunes Electronic Album charts and the follow up looks set to replicate that success.

Coming with a selection of established drum & bass producers alongside some of the hottest new talent the genre has to offer including Logistics, Dkay, Seba, Jenna G, Murdock, Maduk and Future Prophecies ‘Escapism 2’ is undoubtedly Liquicity’s most ambitious project to date, but one listen will show you that ambition has paid off. Packed with glorious, melodic drum & bass that’s at home in your headphones as much as it is on the dancefloor; this is one compilation you can’t afford to ignore this autumn.

Breakbeat Paradise Recordings has now after being in business about 8 years now reach its release number 100, and who better to release that than the man behind the label who also released the very first release: BadboE. The album Pump Up the Funk was originally release back in 2012 and now 2 years later the long awaited instrumental’s release is finally here.

Every since the release of the album, producers and DJs from all over the world has been requesting these instrumentals in their mixes and radio shows. So here are 4 of the very best tracks from the album – striped from vocals so it can be mixed with other vocals or even enjoyed in its own raw funky form.

From the ghetto rocking Ghetto Funklicious to the skanky reggae join One Of Those Days and the happy swing jam Hit It Maestro as well as the soulful In A Hurry are all prefect cuts to slam just about any acapella you can get your hands on. So get creative and mix it up!

BadboE has a lot new music in the pipeline – some remixes for Roast Beatz and Tom Showtime as well as a new 4-track mashup EP. From there he’ll be retuning to some original material featuring some awesome musicians and vocalists. So stay tunes and once again Pump Up The Funk!

Reviews:

Monkeyboxing:
“First there was the album taster EP. Then there was the album itself. Then there was the remix LP. And now, finally, there’s an EP of Pump Up The Funk instrumentals. Ooh he’s a canny one, that Badboe! And just to prove it, he has chosen the very best tunes to release the instrumentals of – just in case you thought you could inflate the dancefloor pressure better than he did…”

Juno Download:
“In December 2012 Badboe dropped his killer debut album. In December 2013 Badboe dropped the remix album. Now, as we near December 2014, we’re being treated to the instrumentals. And they’re worthy additions to the collections even if you have got the previous projects. Highlights include the meandering horn stories on “Ghetto Funkalicious”, the dubby funk bubbles and warm skank of “One Of Those Days” and the smoky come-to-bed vibes of “In A Hurry”. Pump Up The Funk just keeps on giving – we can’t wait to see what comes this time next year.”

The Freestylers had only released a handful of 12″s when they recorded this for the BBC, although both members – Aston Harvey and Matt Cantor – had been around on the scene for years. When I’m browsing through a sample library the first time, they’re mostly organised through alphabetical order – so I start with Bass. And my god, does this pack have BASS.

With it’s intentions placed firmly in the 140 bpm region, Virtual Riot contains an uncompromising set of expertly labelled, clear and weighty samples. It plays to it’s strengths, with folders filled with soaring leads and heavy basslines that would be extremely easy to slot into your next project. The Bass Hits and Loops are extremely well done, and anyone working in the space of dubstep or any other genre that relies on complextro-esque chopping and changing of basslines will be in for a treat.

Along with some awesome Synth Hits, Loops, FX and Drums, this is one of the better sample packs I’ve had the pleasure of going through. While it is clearly geared towards the heavier styles of electronic music, this pack will deliver to the people looking for that sound in spades.

Lending itself to the future bass and garage styles that are so hot today, City Samples is packed to the brim with go-to sample material. The included drums are definitely quality over quantity and you can tell each sample was chosen for it’s particular range rather than bombarding you with a bunch of shitty ones that you’ll never use. Drum loops are separated into each element too, giving you a lot more combinations to work with if you’re just in need of a top loop in your current tune to fill it out.

There’s some interesting Massive Presets to be had, some beautiful and haunting music loops that leave you wanting more along with the included MIDI, Vocals and FX. With all that said, the drums are the star of the show here. Recommended if you’re looking to update your drum sample collection to the new hotness or get some inspiration if you want to try your hand at a new style.
