If you’re a festival lover and you’ve been to Secret Garden Party, Boomtown, Shambhala, Love Saves The Day or Snowbombing, there’s a very good chance you will have come across ‘The Dance-Off’ stage. For those that have never been to any of those festivals, the crew who go by the name of, The Dance-Off Soundsystem, build an installation that is a feast for both the ears and eyes and lay on a 3 day party that you’re unlikely to forget ever!

‘The Dance-Off’ stage is centred around a boxing ring where anyone can step up and go toe to toe with a dance floor foe. Sometimes these dance-off’s are amazing and sometimes it’s total car crash but that’s what adds to the fun of it all. It’s not all about the general public throwing their best shapes though as the boxing ring also hosts expert turntablists and professional Bboys and Bgirls who show everyone how it’s really done! The backdrop to the boxing ring features in it’s heart a DJ booth and to the left and right of that, well, that can be whatever is in the minds of the super creative folk who make up the Dance Off Soundsystem.

I was in attendance at this years Secret Garden Party and I did go to party at ‘The Dance-Off’ stage and I’ve gotta tell you, they sure know how to put on a show! It was a poignant gig for the crew this time around as it all started for them at SGP 10 years ago and it worked out that they would be celebrating their 10th birthday at the last ever SGP festival, which I’m pretty sure is why my mind was blown by the spectacle they put on.

To celebrate their 10th birthday further, The Dance-Off Soundsystem have released 2 free mixes which give a perfect indication of what you should expect if you decide to party with them. The first of these is a lush Funk/Soul/Disco mix that’s full of cool flavours. The second mix is far more lively and features a selection of Breakbeat, Bass, Garage, D n B and Jungle tracks. So that’s one mix to get your house party rockin’, and one to kickback to once you’ve expended all that energy, top stuff!

If you’re ever in the vicinity of ‘The Dance-Off’ stage, pop along for a proper good ol’ knees up. To find some videos of what you can expect CLICK HERE.

‘It’s A Bass Ting’ is the first in series of mixes that UK based, Kurse, will be dropping on a monthly basis. We’re big fans of Funk Hunk’s music here at LSM and one of his fairly recent free tunes, this re-edit of Soulwax’s ‘Essential To Find Out How’ is one that’s getting us all hot under the collar. The sleazy Disco feel and the deep groove is what we’re loving and to see if you do to, hit that play button now! It’ll be so very worth it!

Thanks to Himalia for sharing this great interview with us (you can read it below). His Situations EP is out now on Pegdoll Records. Buy it here http://radi.al/SituationsEP

Big Up for your latest EP “Situations”. What’s the reaction been like so far?
Thanks! It’s been good so far, Had a lot of good feedback and some big channels supporting so all is good

Let’s go back to the beginning, what music did you listen to growing up?
All sorts really. My mum used to love Elvis so a lot of that and old classics but obviously when I got older I got into my own stuff. Think the first album I ever bought was Enema Of the State by Blink 182, and stuff like Eminem and Dr Dre and Limp Bizkit etc. I was a typical skater kid haha!
Do you think your those musical influences have shaped the music you make today?
I guess so. It’s made me have more of a broader selection of styles because I’ve listened to so many genres and bands. I kinda just like making music in general so any style/genre is good for me. I’ve played a lot of instruments and been in bands, I guess that makes me a musician rather than just a producer?
Situations is a multi genre release showing a great variety of sounds. Is there a genre that comes most naturally to you when you produce?
Well I never really know what I’m going to make when I get in the studio, I just explore synths and sounds first then kinda base the track from that. I try to stick to electronic sounding tracks but obviously with my own twist on them. Dubstep and Drum & Bass has played a big part in how I produce as they were my influences for getting into production.
Oh Hey feat Jade Parker is a stand out for us, and the track we’ve chosen to feature alongside this interview. Catchy beat, stripped back with a beautiful vocal. Can you tell us some more about this?
This is probably my favourite track I’ve ever made to be fair. It’s got a really catchy hook and Jade’s vocals fit so well with the track. I’ve recently got into making that kind of chilled trappy hip hoppy sound so it was nice to bridge the two together. Super happy with how it came out!
How was it sitting in the same room with someone and making a track start to finish?
Actually really good, I don’t do enough of it but have been recently.  I find it much better to write a song/structure in the same room as you can bounce off each other rather than being sent vocals across and negotiating via email etc.
How different does it sound from then, when you lay down the first beat, to now, the finished product?
A lot different. It started in a completely different key to start off with, then I pitched it down and layered different vocals and the beat that’s in it now wasn’t even the original beat. It’s nice taking it from one side to another though, you find out about your own writing style when that happens.
What are the vital elements that come into play for you when you’re in the studio?
I go into the studio with a fresh mind most of the time, try and finish projects and start new ones daily. It’s a healthy way of keeping productive I guess.  It helps when you get mates over and you can all brainstorm and inflict each other’s influences.
What’s next for you? Do you have more releases in the bag?
Well, I’m currently writing a few EP’s with a few mates, different styles and MC’s. Going more Hip Hop/Garage/Dubstep vibes. I’m always making new music so to get anything released is a blessing.
Any final words or shouts?
Thanks to anyone/everyone who has supported my music throughout the years! It’s nice to have such a good following of people from all corners of the globe. Big up! Also, shouts to all my family and friends! Thanks guys!

The Captain is widely regarded as one of the top Funky Breaks/Ghetto Funk producers out there. His sound is well polished and has been born from his love of the golden decades of classic R&B, Soul, Latin, Hip-Hop and Rock-n-Roll and those old skool flavours then get accompanied by modern day production techniques. The Captain has received full support from artists like Krafty Kuts, Daddy G (Massive Attack), Freddy FreshFort Knox Five, Skeewiff and Featurecast, so you’re know you’re doing it right when names like that big-up your work.

The Captain has been on the ward before but has only featured on compilation albums and in other DJ’s mixes. This time however, we’re here to big-up his latest free tune, a vibrant and funky Big Beat remix of ‘Bodymovin’ by the Beastie Boys. This sweet and classy jam is one that you’re gonna want to spread across the dance floor to ensure that everyone’s stompin’ to your beats.  I’ve no doubts that many of you will already be acquainted with the sounds of The Captain, but for those of you who are just discovering him for the first time, it is indeed your lucky day!

Steve Jeffery aka Pimpsoul is a one man band, producer and DJ who had a heavy influence in the early Nufunk scene (before it became Ghetto Funk). He has worked in collaborations with Bomb Strikes label owner Mooqee gaining a number one in the Beatport Hip Hop charts and a clever YouTube hit along side DJP for their take on Duck Sauce’s Barbara Streisand.

This mix is from the Summer of 2009 a prime time for the sound of Nufunk which can be heard in this bass heavy party funk set.

This relatively hard to find mix was given away for free with the February issue of Mixmag in 2001 and comes directly from my CD collection. Entitled “Mixmag Presents Elastic Breaks – The Sound Of Breakbeat mixed by the Plump Djs” it was one sort after mix at the time and one that was on high rotation in my CD player. This mix pretty much launched the careers of the Plump DJs and gained them more of a following on a global scale.
