This week’s guest artist, Funkanizer (aka Mike Pal), comes to us all the way from Greece. Mike’s first foray into music was as a bass player and for the last three years he has been making his mark on the international Ghetto Funk scene from his native Athens. His latest EP, Groove Gigolos a co-production with S Strong on Scour Records, has been a huge success. And if you scour the Internet for quality bass driven music like we do, then you know Mike’s work is supported by some of best bass music blogs around including Ghetto Funk (Spinforth’s Scour), HongKongPingPong and Free Breaks Blog just to name a few. For his appearance in The Armory this week, Mike has all of the four major food groups well represented (ghetto funk, glitch hop, breakbeat and drum and bass) in this fabulous 55-minute mix set. Enjoy.

As a founding member of Roni Size/Reprazent Onallee penned three of the four main singles taken from the genre-defining album ‘New Forms’ fighting off stiff competition from Radiohead and The Prodigy to win a Mercury Music Award in the process.

Since then Onallee has toured the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia and America (North and South), performed at just about every festival worth mentioning, including Glastonbury, received a Q Award for Best Live Act and notched up a Gold Disc. Onallee helped to carve a niche for drum & bass in the dance music landscape and paved the way for the immense success that the genre continues to enjoy today.

Now, Onallee is preparing to launch her own debut solo EP on her own imprint, Onallee Records. The ‘Revolution’ EP, produced by drum & bass legend and long term collaborator, Am:So (otherwise known as D Product) is about showcasing Onallee’s distinctive voice, her evolution from lead singer of a band to an artist in her own right and documenting her creative journey along the way.

Defining this bold move is Revolution, the EP’s title track, one whose lyrics intimately mirror the current social climate. As Russell pushes his own Brand of politics by calling for Revolution so does Onallee. “Freedom is a choice” – open yourself up to more. “Freedom is your voice” – stand up, be counted. “Who’s with me?” – join together, it’s time for action. Even as the infectiously energetic opening track pushes into overdrive you begin to realise that this is not just built for the dance floor, this is a drum & bass EP with something to say.

These mirrored themes continue throughout the EP as Onallee works through her own creative and personal Revolution; opening herself up, taking a leap of faith and beginning to define herself as a solo artist.

Sometime Manalogue contributor and Winnipeg underground techno lynchpin John Norman has recently taken over London & Ibiza based techno imprint UNT Records. To celebrate this, and his upcoming birthday, he’s bringing together some of his friends from across North America to share a night of techno. Norman has had a definitive year, with gigs at the Movement Festival in Detroit, Bora Bora Ibiza, and a killer set at the Cube Stage here at home for the MEME Festival. He’s also had some huge support for some pretty big tunes he’s released with Kevin Saunderson’s legendary KMS Records, including repeated play from the likes of Adam Beyer, Carl Cox, Karotte, and Richie Hawtin. His tunes have even found their way into impressive mix compilations such as the Space Ibiza 25th Anniversary Compilation and the Balance Mix series. All of this is what has inspired him to bring a taste of his worldwide adventures for the home town crowd.

John recently sat down with the guys at Shift Radio to chat about the label and upcoming show, you can hear the archive of that interview here:

Joining John are a few names to take notice of. First, Toronto techno legend Greg Gow will make his return to Winnipeg after a very lengthy hiatus, to make his first club appearance. Greg’s Restructured label holds a residency at the infamous Guvernment Nightclub in Toronto, and Greg jets around the globe to play (his gig right following the UNT party is Creamfields Abu Dhabi). He’s a regular on labels like Transmat, Tronic, KMS & more, so there are some serious Detroit techno credentials from the friendly Canadian. This summer his remix of John Norman’s 313 for KMS was a huge hit, and saw back to back weeks on the Drumcode podcast. Greg’s relentless set at the Movement Festival (KMS Afterparty) was a highlight for me from the entire weekend. I strongly recommend coming to check him out.

The second out-of-town guest is Los Angeles based DJ and Producer Mark Kane. Mark is a product of the 90’s New York scene, pushing a dirty sexy tech-house sound. He’s known around the globe for his unique sound. Here’s a taste of a track he and John Norman put together in his studio in California for a sense of things to come.

The night is rounded out with local techno soldier Justin Kace, and some specially crafted visuals from flamewar which will fully transform The Chill. Expect the unexpected.

Tickets are available via Resident Advisor or by emailing [email protected] — $20 advance, $25 at the door.

Electro-Speakeasy is where you’ll find the glitz and glam of flapper dresses and top hats of the speakeasy and prohibition era long gone – rustled up with a unique 21st century twist. This new album, Electro Speakeasy Club V1, has been compiled and mixed by Green Queen Music co-founder, producer, and dj DR CAT, is filled to the brim with dance floor wonders and an uncompromising look at swing-infused house music.

The compilation departs from the classic electro swing genre. It’s a heaving, glorious house, breaks, electro and techno affair, spiced with 20s flair, vintage blues and 21st century bass. It’s very much an album for the dance floor and is full intended to make the dance posse happy as well as the Djs rocking! Included in the 18 tracks, are a number of personal favourites of which have proven themselves on the dance floor at Winnipeg’s Roaring 2020s parties.

Plus, there’s practically an entire gallywag of other tunes, some new and some you may have heard before. If you’re into swing music, this comp is a definite must. Grab it on Juno.
