Canberra’s Lockjaw is back, and he’s going in deep. His next release on Lifestyle Recordings, Cauterise/The Revelation, is set to redefine what it means to be dark and destructive in the world of drum & bass. Serious music, which will raise the bar for its genre, Lockjaw is in full and total control on these two tracks.

As you’ll know by now, Lifestyle is leading the tide when it comes to strong, recognisable music at the forefront of the electronic scene. Not a label to take the easy way in anything, they continue to forge their sound in the fiery pit of experimentation.

Cauterise is a classic piece, where Harlequin MC’s rhymes flow in and out of the beat which Lockjaw has created, before he unleashes the breaks and all hell descends upon you. Rugged, tough and insistent, this one will unnerve, upset and enthral in equal measure. The rhymes kick back in later, before the track is rounded out by more bass, more drums, and more pain. One of the finest pieces of production you’ll have heard in a long time, you’ll want to put this on repeat and smash up the place. Highly recommended.

The Revelation rises up out of the earth, reaching for the heights in its intro, before dropping back to earth and finding its way into a very dirty, very grimy underground. The pulsing, resounding bassline really comes into its own after the second drop, establishing a gritty presence which is reinforced by the effecting, hard-as-nails kicks and snares. The whole package grumbles, rumbles and buries its way into your brain, never to leave.

Lockjaw is fast becoming one of those names that dedicated heads will always want to reach for, for both his fantastic production and big, booming tunes. Make sure you get involved as well, by not missing out on Cauterise/The Revelation.

A bit of a special one this time round from Kent’s Waxy one. It is is one of the first tracks that got him into electronic music. Taking the original by The Crystal Method, stripping it down from the original big beat sound, he molds it beautifully into a piece of progressive house, flowing, meandering and doing the original 1997 hit justice.
