WINNIPEG WEDNESDAY: BASSFACE 3RD YEAR ANNIVERSARY PARTY

Our friends at BASSFACE have been going strong, throwing incredible parties for three years now. To celebrate they’re doing what they know best, cooking hotdogs. No, they’re having a party with some of their favourite local djs and producers.
Friday, February 21
VP Nites (1480 Pembina)
Tix: $10 at the door
Facebook event page
CHRIS KOMUS is one of the key crew members. His output has blown minds the world over with his absurd ability to generate unimaginable sonics. He’s released material on Adapted Records, Enig’matik Records, Monkey Dub Recordings, and so on. It’s always a treat to hear him play…perhaps he might even work his own material into his set.
Komus was also a contributing sound designer for Enig’Matik Records’ portion of Twisted Tools‘ Ultraloop soundpack.
Oh, one more thing…word on the street is the BassFace crew are bringing Stickybuds to Winnipeg once again. Watch these pages for the update.

WINNIPEG WEDNESDAY: LEGIT FRIDAYS

Please forgive the confusing title of the post. With the Winnipeg Wednesday feature we’re trying to highlight some dj culture here in our freezing city of Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada; of which there is an abundance of. The newly resurrected Legit:Fridays is another example of one of the better monthly events going on. Focusing on the wide spectrum of bass music, while simultaneously filtering out the commercially branded noise, Legit:Fridays gives our city a chance to get heavy and keep our shirts on when doing so.
This month features a couple of long-time players. LOTEK, who’s often known as my better half as THE SHAKE, is on the bill and will undoubtedly smash it with jams no one’s heard. He always throws down tunes that has other djs, myself included – even when we play together, scrambling up to the stage to ask about. DAN GILSON is another old-timer (at least in dj years). Perhaps he’s most known for playing breaks, but dood can cook nearly anything up in a set. Relative new-comer, but someone who’s been around for seemingly forever is KARMA KAZI. He’s on the bill playing breaks and house, but given his affliction for mid-tempo, anything could happen.
I have no idea, but the night could sound something like this…

DELHI 2 DUBLIN: REVOLUTION (TIMOTHY WISDOM REMIX)

It’s no secret, TIMOTHY WISDOM has more talent in the fingernail of his pinky than a number producers. On top of his remix and production skills, dood is like a jedi master behind the decks, plus he’s been known to cut a rhyme or two, AND from his last offering we know he can croon smoother than Michael Bublé submerged in a tub of cocoa butter.
While it’s common for Mr. Wisdom to rock the mid-tempo flavours, he also likes to ramp up the bpms like he did for fellow Vancouverites, DELHI 2 DUBLIN. Hand picked for this absurdly inexpensive remix package, Wisdom twists the throttle on this drum n bass remix for a good, old-fashioned dust up.
Check out the other remixes (9 tracks for 7 bucks!)

SLEAZY G’S BANGERZ VOL. 1

It’s been hard to keep up with ROB MADE and his latest project, Sleazy G, the g-house sub-label under the Sleazy Deep umbrella. Releases have been coming rapid fire, like the rat-tat-tat-tat from an automatic weapon. Beats boom more like canons though. Take for instance Bangerz Vol. 1, a little compilation featuring house music gangstas running deep in thug life. Boom.

WARP9: SEEMS LIKE A DREAM

One of the reasons I like ghetto funk is it’s ability to cross genres and enter territory not easily explored. It’s hella fun to play too. WARP9 has successfully captured that spirit since he was knee high to a bass bin. On his latest effort, he wobbles down an alley in the deep American south, tripping over bluesy harmonica samples and scraping out a little glitch as he falls to the pavement. “Seems Like a Dream” arrives via a new label, Funk Fusion, on their debut compilation available on Juno.
I first heard Warp9 over at our friends ghettofunk.co.uk. One of the staples of the blog, SPINFORTH‘s Scour just reached a milestone and to celebrate the 100th post, Warp9 was asked to put together something special. Preview below, then head to the scour page to grab a few handfulls of mid-tempo love.

REDS feat DELHI SULTANATE

Artist: REDS Ft. Delhi Sultanate & Begum X
Title: FEVER
Label: Liondub International
Catalog #: LNDB-019
Format: Vinyl 12" / Digital
Release Date: 7 MARCH 2014
File Under: Reggae, Dubstep, Jungle, Drum & Bass
Remixes by: Marcus Visionary, Mungos Hi Fi, Von D & The Dirty Dubsters
As LionDub International charges into 2014 with new releases and a newly-unveiled Street Series, we welcome a roster of unheard talent to both our main label and the freshly-born sub-label. First off are REDS, a recently-minted East London drum-and-bass duo who we proudly offer their solo vinyl debut featuring vocals from India's Delhi Sultanate and remixes from Canada's jungle don Marcus Visionary, the inimitable Mungos Hi Fi out of Scotland, Dublin's Dirty Dubsters and one of France's dubstep legends, Von D. The bouncy original from the pair falls close to a dancehall feeling, with understated and low-mixed drums dropping away to accentuate the bounding bass rhythm and the center-stage vocal performance. The old-school jungle style of Marcus Visionary comes through strongly in his rolling remix, which revels in the rush of tumbling drums and blasts of mid-range bass. Mungos Hi Fi give this release a solid reggae re-lick with new sound clash style vocals from Delhi Sultanate and sweet choruses from longtime collaborator Begum X out of India. This particular Mungos riddim released earlier in 2013 to great acclaim featuring vocals from none other than Soom-T on her "Bong Bong" anthem. The Dirty Dusters offer up a unique, Euro dancehall twist on their high energy remix. Full vocals and simple, yet, catchy grooves wind up the track in a unique style. From his rich past on labels like Argon, Black Acre, and Boka, it would be expected that Von D give an altogether more contemporary treatment, and fittingly he reduces the tempo, ups the atmospherics, and brings in brutal walls of battering bass in half-step time for the smokers in the room while leaving most of the vocals, which were so present in the other mixes, on the cutting room floor. The transformative ending to this widely-varied EP gives balance and range to the release and presents a strong debut offering for REDS and Delhi Sultanate as Liondub International continues its charge towards new territory for 2014.
