Stacked full of 32 quality tunes alongside an essential full-length DJ mix, Toolroom Knights Mixed By Doorly is a collective showcase of DOORLY’s djing prowess & production mastery. Here’s a collection of ranging from rolling house to techy stompers. The compilation features Doorly originals, remixes, hand-selected choice cuts from friends, as well as a handful of exclusives.

One of these exclusives is featured in this mini profile, where Doorly talks about his influences and confesses that he didn’t start producing until 10 years into his djing career.

It’s impossible to go through all 32 tracks, so here are a few choice ones.

Doorly works a Green Velvet sample in this quite nicely.

Speaking of Green Velvet…

Watch for the release on Toolroom Records, June 9.

We caught up with the owner of legendary DnB imprint, Renegade Hardware, Cold Fusion to chat about the label’s continued success, the upcoming ‘Multiverse EP’ plus a chance to win 2 copies  of the EP on vinyl for readers of this blog….

1.When setting up Renegade Hardware all the way back in 1995, what ethos did you have in mind and who/what influenced you to set up the label?

I began working for Hardware around 2007 so the early years were before my time, however I know from speaking with Mark & Clayton (the guys who started the label originally) Hardware came to fruition as an outlet for a more experimental/aggressive sound that was being produced by some of the in house artists at the time for their first label: Trouble On Vinyl. Some of the music they were creating didn’t fit with the sound of the label, and as a result Hardware was born. It was names such as as Future Forces, Genotype and Kane who were the original label artists so it was their music that started the ball rolling.

2.Did you ever imagine Renegade Hardware would be such an influential imprint, a home for the likes of global acts like Pendulum?

I don’t think that was ever the intention when it first began, it just worked out that way. I think being one of the early labels to become established in a relatively young music movement allowed us the oppertunity to develop and work with a host of influential artists who were just starting out in their careers and were hungry to experiment and create new sounds. A label is only as good as the artists which is represents and we have been lucky enough to work with some very talented artists. In that sense it was an organic development, as I mentioned the label was created as an outlet for a sound that didn’t fit within the scope of Trouble On Vinyl and from there I guess the sound shaped the ethos of the label.

3.Tell us a few highlights from the almost 2 decades of the label.

It’s always the first time experiences for me that I remember well. On a personal level for example, would be picking up my first RH vinyl: the Loxy & Ink Quasimodo EP back in the day. That was my first encounter with the label and changed my perception considerably on what d&b could be about. Then there’s things like the first time I went to Hardware at The End. Or the first time I played there were special highlights for me personally.

Winning the Knowledge Mag Best Label and Best Event awards during the same year would definitely be a highlight in terms of the labels achievements, alongside the underground success of tracks like Messiah to the commercial success of Twist Em Out.

4.And what can we expect from Renegade Hardware in 2014 and beyond?

We will continue to focus on what we do best; discovering and developing the next generation of artists. Release wise look out for Mazteks debut album which will be a highlight release for us this year as well as new material from the roster including Trilo, Minor Rain, Subtension and Klax who have all got some great music in the pipeline.

As for beyond that, 2015 will see us enter our 20th year so expect some big events around the world to coincide with that milestone. It’s going to be a year to remember, believe me!

The next release on Renegade Hardware is out on the 9th June, 2014, ‘The Multiverse EP’ featuring tracks by Optiv & BTK & Cold Fusion, Maztek & Cern, Dose & Cern &  Subtension, Minor Rain & Trilo and we have two vinyl copies to give away in our exclusive competition. Enter by following the instructions on the widget below and dont forget to enter by all methods for more chances to win.

Hello swingers and swingettes!! !

I’ve got a speakeasy full of of neo-burlesque divas, banging blues berzerkas, and sexy screen sirens to report upon and bring freshly swinging into your world. From the bassline drive of the Dutty Moonshakers, Vintage at Voltage, Flatcapped Farmers, to more free tunes than you can drop a piano on, let’s swing into the future with a dance from the past…

Free Music Swing Hop Don’t Stop – Speakeasy Vol. 3 – Compiled by Don Mescal Top of the class has to go to this free compilation from Don Mescal and the Montreal Speakeasy crew. There’s too many to mention on this one, try C@ In The H@, Menage Quad, JPod, Smokey Joe and the Kid and many, many more. Best of all it’s totally FREE so, quite simply get downloading  here and dive on in!

Loving this funking up of Etta James’ soulful singing style by Copycat. Available for a limited time from his bandcamp.

Big up to Sammy Senior for this smashing remix which will be doing plenty of damage at dancefloors this summer.

Deladap are grooving along nicely on this choice freebie:

Sound Assembly’s Sally Bloomer teamed up with Cut La Roc for this release. They’ve nicely decided to give the Rory Hoy remix away:

Algorythmik have very kindly decided to give away their latest EP from their facebook. A nice mix of funk, electro and big beats going on here:

Lamuzgueule have a new album coming up right now, and in preparation have kindly offered these freebies from their track with Bart & Baker:

Minimatic have been getting busy on this piano based slice of swinging ragtime:

It’s great to have Francis Red back with this great swing banger:

Neki Stranac has been mixing balkan flavours with the moombahton sound. Quality bass bothering business.

This has been out for a bit but I’ve just come across it from Gramophonedzie. It’s got a nice house tempo with a bluesy style riff and vocals.

The Jenova Collective have been looking less far back in time for this ghetto funk style remix of Parliament:

Ahead of their first EP which is coming out on June 15th Captain Flatcap have put together this tasty slice of swinging whomp. Get it from Jack The Cad’s blog here.

Nice piece of uptempo swing from Frizzo:

What’s not to like about the retro sounding funk of Cee-Roo?

Defunk has been adding the bass n glitch to this 60′s classic. It never sounded like this before!

Swinging, oriental, and maybe a little bit odd. The Swingbot are back…

Nice to hear a new version of Singing In The Rain from Swing-Thru:

And this…

Fancy hearing a well put together interview with Molotov Jukebox? Check this out:

There’s no download on this one, but I just wanted to add in the rather great live sounds of the Electronic Swing Orchestra:

New Releases Dutty Moonshine – Rum Runners LP It’s great that Dutty Moonshine have managed to release their debut album after numerous strong EP’s and releases up until now. Although you can still hear little snippets of swing thrown in, the Dutty boys have definitely headed down the path marked bass because this release has more in common with the ghetto funk crew than the electro swingers. Recommended.

Vintage Voltage: The Sounds of Trapeze, Vol.1 Not long ago I mentioned in a post that someone had said not much was going with electro swing in San Francisco. It turns out that this was totally inaccurate because Delachaux has been in touch saying that San Francisco has been rocking the swing sound for a long time with their infamous Trapeze parties. They’ve now gone one better and released a cracking compilation of banging swingers on DirtyVolt Records featuring amongst others Dutty Moonshine, Bart & Baker, Defunk and Mr Jennings. It’s only $6 from bandcamp.

Gypsy Fever – Monkey Records Full marks to Monkey Records for bringing out a great compilation featuring all of the New Zealand and Australian eastern european and balkan influenced bands. If you like your gypsy flavoured music this is a must. Available for only 8 euros from bandcamp.

Niko Ne Zna – Renegade Brass Bandits If you like the sound of that last one check out this album which is rocking the brass, balkan and gypsy sound. Great accomplished musicianship and live grooves. Get it from bandcamp.

Swing Republic – The Return Of Electro Swing Republic EP Denmark’s Per Ebdrup is back with a new EP on Freshly Squeezed in advance of his bands new album. Featuring four jazzy and laid back tracks with the vocal talents of Billie Holiday, Blind Willie McTell, The Mills Brothers and The Boswell Sisters.

Bart & Baker feat Kitten On The Keys – Whoopee If you want a polished slice of swing and pop then look no further than another slick release from Bart & Baker. Buy from Juno.

Electro Blues – Vol 2 Sampler (Vinyl Only) Freshly Squeezed have brought out a vinyl only sampler for their upcoming Electro Blues Vol 2 compilation. It features the cracking Work Song by Cee Roo, Bobby C Sound TV and Ecklectic Mick. Available from here.

DJ Mixes If you like your swing with a heavy handful of bass then check out Wolfies latest mixtape…

Nice to see everyone’s favourite hooker is back swinging again…

That’s it. See you in a month! If you’ve got anything you’d like included in future roundups hit me up on soundcloud.

Forward-thinking dancehall dubbers Mungo’s Hi-Fi are pleased to announce the release of their new album ‘Serious Time’via Scotch Bonnet Records, set for release on 2nd June.

The Scottish reggae soundsystem project, which hails from Glasgow, began as a collective of music fans before transitioning into DJs playing local bars and clubs. Frustrated by the sound quality of in-house systems, the group has spent over a decade investing in their own rig, aiming for full control of their sound in a unique holistic approach that caters to their listening crowd.

Following on from their 2011 release ‘Forward Ever’, ‘Serious Time’ is a record that threads together all aspects of soundsystem bizness, from Studio One style live brass to digital bass bangers. Album opener and lead single ‘Serious Time’ abounds with feel-good reggae vibes that make for a promising summer jam, while further stand-out tracks include the dub-heavy ‘Bike Rider’, which combines a driving bassline, hypnotic percussive patterns and distinctive vocals from French dubber Pupajim for a compelling urban feel.

Meanwhile, fifth track ‘Thousand Style’ effortlessly samples the Beverley Hills Cop theme with grizzly vocals from dancehall talent Mr Williamz, an artist whose credentials include a feature spot on electronic giants Major Lazer’s track‘Smooth Sailing’.

Boasting the fat, clean productions we’ve come to expect from the Hi-Fi crew, the record simultaneously hosts vocal talent by the ton, with reggae heavyweights Peter Metro and Cornel Campbell, who lends his trademark falsetto vocals to the final track on the album, ‘Jah Say Love’, rubbing shoulders with Mungo’s regulars Mr Williamz, Soom T, Charlie P, YT, Marina P, Solo Banton and Parly B. Other special guest appearances include Blackout JA, Speng Bond, and Warrior Queen.

This third double LP arrives hot on the heels of their massive collaborations with Major Lazer and Brighton production heavyweight Prince Fatty, the latter of which received rave reviews from Mojo and Clash:

“A perfect encapsulation of the creative camaraderie running through British reggae right now, the sheer diversity of style on show is breathtaking” Robin Murray, Clash

What’s more, their numerous globe-trotting live shows have included memorable festival appearances at the likes ofGlastonbury, Womad and Outlook, to which they’ll make a welcome return this year.

Having developed a name for themselves flexing their soundsystem talents across the arenas of reggae, dub and dancehall, this latest album sees Mungo’s Hi-Fi up their game, proving once again that it’s not about the volume – it’s all about the vibes.

It is with a heavy less than three and a teary cheek that we welcome the fourth and final freebie to be released from Sammy Senior’s private arsenal of bangers, smashers and ripper-uppers. Are we blue? Hell no! We are green! And red! Like an acid flashback or a baboon’s arse hanging out of a too tight glittering green thong. Sir Samuel covers Max Romeo’s ‘Chase The Devil’ in muppet hair and angry ginger juice, dips it in a crucible of molten chav sovereign rings, hangs it on a washing line made of badger’s whiskers and beats it dry with rolled up 70’s porn mags. You’ll need to make sure you’ve got your pants on before you listen to this and have access to another pair of pants, because you will soil yourself freely and happily! Sir Sammy, we salute you!
