You know it’s only months with less than twenty eight days in them when there probably isn’t a Morlack release about to drop and years without four numbers when any given release doesn’t include some sort of nod towards the man’s beloved DC go-go music. So it won’t come as any surprise to learn that the Funk Blasters label boss is dropping Good To Go Go Vol. III later this week – a mammoth thirteen-track third installment following in the wake of its four and five track predecessors.

Basically, it’s business as usual but on an industrial scale as Morlack tweaks the 80s period of this offshoot of seventies funk (which later morphed into an offshoot of eighties hip-hop and beyond but maintained the name ‘go-go’) and occasionally go-go-ises stuff that wasn’t in the first place. There’s one pure edit (opener Don’t Stand For Dodge City) and an Trouble Funk ‘almost edit’ (Feel The Music), plus plenty of mashing of go-go beats with go-go friendly pellas – one from King Tee for example who turns up (unbeknownst to him, one suspects) on Cabbage Stuff. Expect to hear bits of go-go godfather Chuck Brown too and elsewhere – well – keep your ears peeled. Imagine the sort of synth and programmed drum sounds that were big when Miami Vice ruled the airwaves (and yuppies’ wardrobes) but prepped to do battle with ghetto funk and you’re ballpark. “Every now and then the outre space-glam ’80s outfits in Morlack’s wardrobe start to beckon and before you know it he’s rustled up another fine collection dedicated to his love of Go-Go, the cult proto hip-hop sound that emanated from Washington DC. If you’re unfamiliar with this style, you can look to the Fresh Prince theme to get an idea (albeit a watered down version). For the real deal though check out the 13 raw cuts here that boast those signature rolling electro drums, funk samples and carefully layered acapelllas from the likes of King Tee and Chuck Brown.”

This week in The Armory we celebrate the 100th episode of the podcast with our good pal, Motion Potion, respected San Francisco DJ and founder of the hugely successful production/promotion services company, HUSHConcerts. “This was my tenth year playing at Bonnaroo Festival and to say that this is an honor is quite an understatement. As I explain clearly in my blog post, this festival is in many ways to credit for my having a career at all. For my tenth year, they had me play six sets over three days and each one was different. I played two sunshine vibe daytime sets, a special 80’s set to celebrate Tears For Fears appearance at the festival, and a late night EDM scorcher on a flaming artcar. For this evening Silent Disco set I wanted to throw out any notion of “newness” or “hipness” and just play my favorite funky party jams and rock bangers for an audience that was waiting (on average) 2 hours to get into the tent. I also wanted to do some major shouting out to Robert Plant, who was in attendance. As it was the place went batshit crazy and I was extremely happy with the result. Often, a good show means a bad recording but I was happy enough about this recording to share it and so honored to have Zach and Armory agree to put it out. Enjoy!” – MoPo
